which implies he has a criminal record, or has been under surveillance.

Oh shit, even simpler - this guy was not a criminal mastermind:

But a key part of the equation has just emerged this morning. The perpetrators or single perpetrator used cell phones as detonating devices. But the perp appears to have used his or their actual cell phones - not burner phones purchased for this specific purpose but ones they'd used as their cell phones, calling friends and associates, storing personal information. In at least one case, that phone was part of a bomb that didn't detonate. So NYPD and FBI investigators were able to secure the phone and download lots of personal information, call records etc. Initial reports suggest this was a key break leading to the arrest of suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/an-emerging-part-of-the-story

So the video and fignerprints may just have been confirmatory.

What are the chances of 2 (old-style) Beetles and a Camper van being in the same picture, these days?

Off topic, I watched "The Quatermass Xperiment" (correct spelling: when the film version was, absurdly, given an 'X' certificate, the producers thought they've play up to that by dropping the 'E' from the title. And thus Hammer Films was born ...) over the weekend. At the start, the fire brigade turn up to douse the returned space rocket in a fire engine that looks like it was built in the 1920s. And then Professor Quatermass rocks up - in a VW camper van (film made about 1955). It's amazing that one vehicle can span that amount of time ...

It’s just the harshest place you’ve ever seen. Nothing living, not so much as a blade of grass anywhere. My cell was all concrete. Every single thing, made out of concrete. The walls, floor, the desk, the sink, even the bed — a slab of concrete. Then you get a little fortified (recreation cage) that’s outside that you get to go walk around in for an hour a day.It ain’t no lollygagging solitary confinement like you have at some other prisons — it’s 22, 23 hours in this concrete room, then one (to two) hours in this fenced-in area, and two days a week there was no rec though, and sometimes they just canceled it for no reason.

And felt persecuted/harassed/abused because of their religion.

This sense of hopelessness and powerlessness plays a huge part in the radicalization process. It opens the door to let evil in.

Trump's rhetoric and the nonsense from people like him is exactly what helps create terrorists right here on US soil.

Very glad no one died from all of this. Hopefully any others are found quickly.

Mon Sep 19, 2016, 12:03 PM
Sep 2016
On Feb. 27, 1933, the building was destroyed — and no matter who did it, the Nazis got what they wanted

It’s a semi-mystery that’s over eight decades long: who set fire to the Reichstag, the German parliament, on Feb. 27, 1933?

As described in the Mar. 6, 1933, issue of TIME, the arson came amid “a campaign of unparalleled violence and bitterness” by then-Chancellor Adolf Hitler, in advance of an approaching German election, and it turned a building that was “as famous through Germany as is the dome of the Capitol in Washington among U. S. citizens” into “a glowing hodge-podge of incandescent girders.”

Marinus van der Lubbe, an unemployed Dutch bricklayer linked to the Communist party, was tried and executed for the crime the following year, but even then TIME questioned whether the Nazis who held him responsible were also the ones who had paid him to set the fire, “promising to save his neck by a Presidential reprieve and to reward him handsomely for hiding their identity and taking the whole blame in court.”

In 1981, a West Berlin court declared that the trial had been “a miscarriage of justice,” though they stopped short of saying that he had been innocent. In 2001, evidence emerged that the conspiracy theory had been right along, with historians announcing that the Nazis had been the ones responsible for the fire, ..............

One advantage we have is these guys are usually not well schooled or bright. Setting off your explosive device INSIDE a metal dumpster is an indicator in this case. We should keep them in the dark as much as possible about our techniques.

Indeed, sometimes an ineffective attack is a "test" to see exactly how we respond. We learned that from clinic bombers back in the day.
