Acclaimed playwright Edward Albee dies at 88

Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee has died in suburban New York City at age 88.

Albee challenged theatrical convention in masterworks such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and A Delicate Balance.

Albee assistant Jackob Holder says the playwright died Friday at his home on Long Island. No cause of death has been given.

in college thirty years ago. I'd heard of it (it was kinda hard not to, being the daughter of English teachers, lol) but had never actually read/studied any of his work. I was really fascinated with how he stretched and challenged conventional theatrical boundaries; I've always been drawn to artists who think outside the box and do things differently. I know he had plenty of detractors at first, but now his brilliance and originality is truly recognized and later playwrights felt, and still feel, much freer to challenge boundaries and conventions.

It really took courage for him to do what he did and weather the storm of criticism and adverse reaction that came before things settled down and his work became more "normal" and positively recognized.

but I'm so tired of losing people who meant a lot to me. And who did a lot for all of us.

Irrelevant side note - I've played The Musician in The Sandbox.

Thank you, Mr. Albee.
