Protest follows complaints by women’s groups of lenient sentences given to perpetrators

Thousands of people marched in Peru’s capital on Saturday to protest violence against woman and what they say is the indifference of the judicial system. The march, which brought together activists, artists, politicians and citizens, ended at Lima’s palace of justice.

The protest follows complaints by women’s groups of lenient sentences given to perpetrators.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski took part in the march along with first lady Nancy Lange.

In the march “we are going to ask for facilities for women to denounce violence because abuse flourishes in an environment where complaints cannot be made and the blows are absorbed in silence and this is not how it should be,” said Kuczynski.

Women’s rights campaigners will take to the streets of Peru on Saturday to protest against sexual violence, in a move described by the country’s women’s minister as “a cry against impunity”.

Organisers estimate that more than 50,000 people could take part in the march in the capital, Lima. Thousands more are expected to participate in about 23 towns and cities across the country.

The march follows protests in Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil over the past year, under the slogan #NiUnaMenos (Not One Less), which paraphrases the words of murdered Mexican activist and poet Susana Chavez Castillo: “Ni una mujer menos, ni una muerte más” (Not one woman less, not one more death).

According to a 2015 study by Peru’s ombudsman’s office, La Defensoría del Pueblo, in 81% of the studied cases no measures were taken to protect survivors of attempted femicide. As a result, 24% of those women who had sought help were murdered by the assailant they had reported to the authorities, the study concluded.

Multitudinaria movilización de mujeres. Más de 150 mil personas salieron a las calles en Lima y otras miles en provincias para rechazar todo tipo de violencia contra la mujer. La iniciativa social #NiUnaMenos también se replicó en varias ciudades del mundo. Las voces de protesta no fueron solo en contra de los agresores y victimarios, sino también contra los malos magistrados del Poder Judicial.
