US wildlife refuge standoff defendant scuffles with deputies

Updated 8:49 pm, Tuesday, August 9, 2016

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon standoff defendant Ryan Bundy was involved in an altercation with deputies Tuesday when he refused to be handcuffed for transport, authorities said.

U.S. marshals were scheduled to transport Bundy about 6 a.m. Tuesday, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported (http://goo.gl/VZn4kn).

Multnomah County jail spokesman Capt. Steve Alexander said he didn't know where Bundy was going, but he said Bundy didn't want to leave the cell and argued with a sergeant who was trying to handcuff him. Alexander said that when Bundy "spun around" the sergeant took him to the ground.

His supporters said on social media that Bundy sustained bruises. Alexander said Bundy was examined by medical staff, and no redness or anything like that was noted. "He was fine," Alexander said.

any other uncooperative suspect? Tase, beat him into submission? They certainly wouldn't bargain with him or give a crap about what happens to him. He'd comply, or he'd end up in a body cast.

Lord knows, I have no sympathy for the Bundys. The Multnomah County Jail (where they are housed), however, is a brutal place.

My mentally ill son was resistant when these guards tried to move him during a psychotic break. The guards tazed him, wrestled him into shackles, and put him in solitary confinement for three weeks. Nothing meaningful was done to address his obvious psychosis. He left jail sicker than when he was arrested.

Jails should not replace mental hospitals.....but they have. Ryan Bundy may be a jerk. My guess is that he is also unstable and delisional. Unless the guards are in palpable danger, these violent "extractions" should not be common practice.

The Portland Police are under scrutiny from the Justice Department after a string of shootings involving mentally ill (mostly minority) citizens. The same scrutiny needs to be applied to the jail that shares the same building.

And I most definitely am empathetic and understanding towards the exact problems you describe when it comes to our criminal 'justice' system.

That being said ... my guess is that Ryan Bundy is NOT suffering anything resembling the sort of 'psychotic break' you're describing happened to your son.

Ergo, I think we're talking about the proverbial 'apples and oranges' when it comes to this particular situation. I think in HIS case, we're talking about someone who is consciously manipulating 'the system', and NOT for the purpose of promoting proper JUSTICE, as I'd like to have seen in your son's case. But rather, he's acting as he is ... for an ENTIRELY different reason.

Just my $.02, fwiw ...

As an aside, I absolutely DESPISE the use of 'solitary' as a means to deal with anyone, most importantly people suffering from mental illness. NOTHING could be more cruel and unusual. It's truly a despicable practice. My heart goes out to you and yours ...
