Putin to Shun Olympic Opening Ceremony

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the opening ceremony of this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio on Aug. 6, the Kremlin announced Monday.
Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov did not comment on whether Putin would visit other events at the competition, saying that the call was Putin's personal decision.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which has been under pressure to ban the Russian team following reports of widespread state-sponsored doping, decided to allow Russian athletes to compete at the competition based on the approval of individual athletes by their independent sports federations.
Putin ordered the creation of an independent commission into doping on Friday, appointing Russian IOC delegate Vitaly Smirnov, as its chairperson. Peskov said that the Kremlin welcomed the IOCs decision, whilst underlining the need for tighter cooperation between Russia and the IOC in order to draw a line under the doping scandal. We hope that [Smirnovs] commission will play a key role in this, Peskov said.

(2,208 posts)Look, we all know Putin gave the OK to the STATE SPONSORED doping that got their track and field team banned, so he should just shut the hell up already.
The ENTIRE Russian olympic team should be BANNED from the 2016 AND the 2020 Olympics. Enough talk, more action.
Sure, its only sports, but Putin's very sense of MANNLYNESS is tied to Russian sports success, so by banning the Russian team, not only do we support FairPlay and sportsmanship, we get to hit Putin right where it hurts his ego the most.

(35,296 posts)Zika in Russian has the stress on the "a", and comes out as "virus zika", "the Zika virus". It's a fear for those going to Brazil. A manly man like Putin would not fear something so trivial.
"Virus zika" sounds exactly like "virus zeka", which is the "zek's virus." A zek is a ZK, or z/k, an "imprisoned Red Army soldier" or zakliuchennyi krasnoarmeets in the late '20s and '30s. Those who were politically unreliable. Came to spread to any inhabitant of the GULags. It was a common slang (and official) term.
As former KGB, Putain would surely know this. And fear being contaminated with such a life-threatening virus.
(Don't take this seriously. I'm just having a bit of cross-language pun.)
