Claire McCaskill to skip Democratic National Convention

Sen. Claire McCaskill, vulnerable in her re-election bid, reportedly joined a growing faction of Democrats begging off this summer's Democratic National Convention.

The Missouri senator made the decision Tuesday to skip the national convention, which takes place Sept. 3-6, Pema Levy first reported for Talking Points Memo. The convention is where President Barack Obama will formally receive his party's nomination.

"In years when Claire is on the ballot, she has historically not gone to the convention," an anonymous aide told the news outlet, "because she believes it's important to stay in Missouri to talk to voters." Her campaign highlighted McCaskill's decision to skip the 2004 national convention.

When contacted by Yahoo News to confirm the report, campaign workers said all spokespersons were in a staff meeting and unavailable. The Associated Press has confirmed the report.

If you're outside MO, send your $ to someone more progressive. Hope the people who ran Robin Carnahan's senate campaign aren't running Claire's. How many other battleground states (or states in play) have Dem senators up. She's probably to avoid being portrayed as rubber stamp like she portrayed Jim Talent as a Bush rubber stamp in the 06 election. Would Obama be targeting MO without Claire up for re-election, will he target if it's close in the fall, pulls haven't in MO haven't shown Mittens to be any more popular than Obama in MO, it appears both are hated there.

1. Below is a copy of Claire's tweet on the matter

Claire McCaskill ‏
@clairecmc

Whole lot of nothing over me campaigning w/Mo folks instead of going to convention w/party honchos. Bet POTUS agrees with my decision.

2. That's one hell of a ballsy claim on her part....

True, or not, (my guess would be that the President probably DOES agree with that call), that takes some moxie. A Democrat that has to beg off her own parties convention so as not to upset the people who probably WON'T vote for her anyway. I hate living in MO sometimes.

4. Many people in MO are ticket splitters

(Jay) Nixon won big in 08 and looks to win big again while McCain barely won the state, the Repukes also eliminated the straight party ticket. Primaries are open, there is no party registration. I don't think Claire appeared with Obama at any campaign rallys in MO in 08.

3. Claire's seat is most likely gone anyway, she's down 10 in polling. She should stay to campaign.

6. The Democratic Party is starting to resemble the Zionist Suicide Brigade in Monty Python's movie.

"The Life Of Brian".

Four years ago we were reading the repukes their last rites. Now these cowards are committing seppuku faster than you can hand them the sword.

12. Is that all candidates or just those in close elections?

How many Repuke candidates in close elections will be going to Tampa?

13. The same Claire McCaskill who endorsed Obama in 2008 because her daughter advised her to do so?

The same woman who became a national co-chair of his 2008 campaign? That Claire McCaskill?

She will not be attending the convention this year?

Too precious..........

14. On 1 hand I see why she's doing this but it won't help her either way so she might as well go to NC.

They're going to call her a rubber stamp anyway.

15. But what benefits would she get going to the convention instead of campaigning in MO?

She has more to gain skipping the convention. Gives more campaign time

16. None.

But that's not going to stop the gloom and doom crowd from finding fault with her decision.
