University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan has been reinstated.
The Board of Visitors' vote was 15-0, the university tweeted.
Sullivan was removed earlier this month without a vote and without an initial explanation. Rector Helen Dragas said later "the university wasn't acting quickly enough to address state and federal funding reductions, online education delivery and other challenges, but didn't offer specific examples of how she thinks Sullivan has fallen short," AP wrote earlier.

UVa board reinstates ousted president after outcry
By ZINIE CHEN SAMPSON, Associated Press 12 minutes ago
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) The University of Virginia reinstated its popular president Tuesday less than three weeks after ousting her in a secretive move that infuriated students and faculty, had the governor threatening to fire the entire governing board and sparked a debate about the best way to operate public universities in an era of tight finances.
The 15-member Board of Visitors voted unanimously to reinstate Teresa Sullivan during a brief meeting held at the university's historic Rotunda. Shortly after the vote, Sullivan thanked the board members for their renewed confidence in her leadership of the prestigious institution founded by Thomas Jefferson.
"I want to partner with you in bringing about what's best for the university," Sullivan said as cheers erupted outside the Rotunda where her supporters had gathered.

UVa. board considers reinstating ousted president
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) The University of Virginia's governing board is to consider whether to reinstate Teresa Sullivan, who was ousted without a vote earlier this month.
The Board of Visitors was to meet Tuesday afternoon at the university's historic Rotunda. Faculty, students and others planned to hold a demonstration outside the meeting to show support for the popular Sullivan, who became U.Va.'s eighth president and its first female leader in August 2010.
A majority of the 15-member board would have to approve the reinstatement for Sullivan to remain in office. Sullivan declined to comment before the meeting through a spokeswoman with a media relations firm she has hired. Messages for board Rector Helen Dragas and the other board members weren't immediately returned.
U.Va. officials announced June 10 that Sullivan would step down Aug. 15, surprising the university community and triggering an outcry over the lack of explanation about her forced resignation. Dragas since has said the university wasn't acting quickly enough to address state and federal funding reductions, online education delivery and other challenges, but didn't offer specific examples of how she thinks Sullivan has fallen short.
E-mails that became public showed the roles Dragas and vice rector Mark Kington played in planning the ouster in the weeks ahead of the announcement and showed them exchanging links to articles addressing issues that surfaced in statements related to Sullivan's removal. An e-mail from Peter Kiernan, a top donor who chaired the Darden School Foundation, also surfaced, showing that he supported and had advance knowledge of the plan. Kiernan subsequently resigned from the foundation.

(4,528 posts)University of Phoenix which is not a college in my opinion. Those for profit schools are scams. Instead we should commit to more community colleges and trade schools. It is imperative that we place money where it belongs.

(1,782 posts)This issue is important to me because my daughter will start at UVA this August. I googled around some and couldn't find much about what Dragas is up to. Sounds like you have more info than I do.
I was feeling great about being able to send my daughter to a top-notch school for in-state rates. Now I don't know what to think.

(1,782 posts). . . but it was vague, said she wanted to make change faster than Sullivan would, nothing saying what she really wanted to do. So I wonder how you got that she wanted to make it like the University of Phoenix.

(2,096 posts)They need to dump Dragas. If there hadn't been a public backlash there is no way Sullivan would have been reinstated.

(2,198 posts)I think a lot of this had to do with people with too much money running out of elitist ideas. Just trying to make it more difficult for average folks to get an education. Great discussion of this yesterday....I'll try to find the link and post it but you will have to link in and listen to the program...I think it was Fresh Air but I am not sure. I just listen to all the programs on WAMU from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Washington Post
RICHMOND Gov. Robert F. McDonnell on Friday reappointed Helen E. Dragas, the embattled leader of the University of Virginias governing board, to a second four-year term on the board.
Dragas, as U-Va. rector, drew fierce criticism this month for organizing the ouster of the schools popular president, Teresa Sullivan. On Tuesday, Dragas reversed course and voted with a unanimous Board of Visitors to reinstate Sullivan.
Dragas, a Virginia Beach developer, was first appointed to the board by McDonnells Democratic predecessor, Timothy M. Kaine. Some of the anger toward Dragas and her allies on the board subsided this week after the board rescinded the forced resignation of Sullivan.
Still, the reappointment of Dragas could raise questions about whether rifts on the board that had appeared during the leadership crisis could reemerge in coming years. McDonnell (R) brushed aside that issue.
