Poll: Election winner won't impact economy much

Source: AP-Excite

By CONNIE CASS

WASHINGTON (AP) - When it comes to the economy, half of Americans in a new poll say it won't matter much whether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney wins - even though the presidential candidates have staked their chances on which would be better at fixing the economic mess.

People are especially pessimistic about the future president's influence over jobs, according to the Associated Press-GfK poll. Asked how much impact the November winner will have on unemployment, 6 in 10 gave answers ranging from slim to none.

Yet the candidates, the polls and the pundits agree - the economy is the issue of 2012. Can either man convince voters that he would set things right?

James Gray of Snow Hill, N.C., is skeptical.

People might feel different when Romney ends Medicare, Medicaide,Unemployment Insurance, minimum wage, fair labor standards, and outsources the rest of our jobs to overseas. And sells our parks, our roads, our commons, our local governments to the Chinese or some other foreign country or corporation. Then allows us to drink dirty water, eat tainted and poisoned food, and allows us to breathe toxic air.

That would be absolutely devasting for the country...That would give rethugs a 6-3 vote on just about every issue that comes before them (abortion, voting rights, environment, etc.)

Do people who hate Obama really think by electing Romney that things will magically go back to the way they were?

It's interesting how these polls leave out the biggest cause of the problem and never ask whether lobbyists should control Congress or "the people"?

Most reports deal with the action on the big markets that for many people, mean nothing. There are pensions and also municipalites and other investors who make or lose money from that part of the economy, but it's indirect.

Media blabs non-stop about Wall Street since they pay the cost of programming, but most people are not heavily invested in it and see the reports like the society page of the newspapers, detailing the adventures of the rich, not their lives.

They pay much more attention to the concrete things closer to them, good or bad, and made a determination of where they'll be for the next few years. They don't believe anything will change the facts of life for them.

Most Americans don't see their financial worth reflected in Wall Street firms. Their life saving is in their homes, etc. The losses there might effect thei pensions in the long run, and the privatization of healthcare by destroying Medicare, Medicaid or even Social Security, are not as immediate or they believe what has been going on in other countries in their problem, and it can't happen here.

But it can, and it will, when the private sector has enough power to shift those funds and Grover gets his man to sign his bills. Alternative CT sources also preach that there is no difference between the two men or parties, as well.
