Draft GOP platform calls for 'America first' trade policy, drops call for marriage amendment

Source: CNN

Cleveland (CNN)A first draft of the document that will become the GOP platform at this year's Republican convention sticks to Donald Trump's tough talk on trade, but leaves the long-time party position opposing abortion rights relatively unchanged.

And in a major shift, the platform would drop the pursuit of a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman, opting instead to oppose the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage and calling on the matter to be decided by the states.

The draft language shared with CNN also would slightly alter the party's position on Israel, reinstating a reference to an "undivided" Jerusalem and removing a reference to Palestine in support of a two-state solution.

The language was shared with members of the Platform Committee by the Republican National Committee at an orientation on Sunday night as the events in Cleveland began. The document will form the basis of discussions for the panel, which will meet this week to adapt the language and vote on a final proposal, which will then go before the full convention next week.

Does anyone reference the platform, once it's set? Will PHC use it to guide herself during her presidency? I doubt it.

If they can assure Republicans that Trump will be perfectly happy signing Republican Congressional legislation, we'll have a contest in November.

Trump does not want to be branded a loser. It's not in his nature.

We have to rally likewise - around Hillary!!!

8. If any of the GOP think this platform will "rein in" Trump they're fooling themselves...

Trump does what Trump wants for Trump. He probably won't oppose any of those platforms, but he'll happily go his own way, at any time, to funnel money into his pockets.

I suspect what the GOP really wants--and probably only wants--is for Republicans to go to the polls and vote in Republican Representatives, keeping Congress in GOP hands. They've got to know, at this point, that beating Hillary is a long-shot (obviously, we can't rely on that, and must keep up the heat and momentum). And they've got to know that Trump isn't a trusted buddy and friend that they can rely on. They wouldn't say "no" to having him in the White House, but they may be thinking Hilary is the lesser evil.

But they can't lose Congress. Congress is how they obstruct and funnel money into their pockets and those of their backers. So, they put up things like the "anti-gay marriage amendment" in an attempt lure their usual voters to the polls. Not for Trump's sake, but to keep Congress GOP.

And, yes, of course, such voters are being fooled by this platform. The GOP always works one of two ways and it always fools those who vote for them: (1) Unless you vote for us government will take away your freedom (white power and privileges), (2) government has taken away your freedom and we're going to give it back to you (white power and privileges). It works because people want to believe their representatives and president can change things with the snap of a finger--that change doesn't take time, patience, work and investment. This is why Trump is so popular with them. He never says "It's going to be hard and take time..." he says, "We'll do this!" Like he's going to wave a magic wand.

Most voters in this world want a fairy godmother for president who will give them what they selfishly want, not a real man/woman who is going to do real work to create real change and make the country a better place for all.

The GOP running on a plank that should belong to labor.

The democratic platform on the side of the Chamber of Commerce.

Bizarroland. As well as precarious.

TPP will ever do. There is a reason that labor does not support Trump.

It will be interesting to see if Trump's 'right-to-work' proposal makes into the GOP platform. I bet it does.

Are you implying that if someone opposes the TPP they have to support right to work?

Right to work is a state decision.

The TPP is a federal decision.

Is this a deflection?
