Ex-House Speaker, 'serial child molester' Dennis Hastert goes to prison

Source: CNN

(CNN)Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert reported to prison Wednesday to begin a 15-month sentence in a hush money case stemming from allegations that he sexually abused young boys, authorities said.

Hastert, 74, entered the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota. He is not facing sexual abuse charges because the statutes of limitation have expired. But he pleaded guilty to hiding money transactions, admitting that he paid $3.5 million to keep one victim quiet.

The incidents allegedly happened when he was a teacher and wrestling coach in Illinois in the 1960s and '70s.

In addition to his prison term, the former Republican lawmaker was ordered to pay $250,000 to a victims' fund and enter a sex offender treatment program.

only should have happened much sooner and lasted much longer.

Wish he were joining Gingrich, DeLay and Boehner in there. (Boehner? handing out bribes on the house floor.)

In Congress, Hastert supported the Child Abuse Prevention and Enforcement Act of 2000, which among other measures, sought to prevent and punish the sexual abuse of minors.

And in 2003, when Utah teenager Elizabeth Smart was recovered after being kidnapped, sexually assaulted and held captive for nine months, Hastert took a strong stance in a statement.

"It is important to have a national notification system to help safely recover children kidnapped by child predators," he said. "But it is equally important to stop those predators before they strike, to put repeat child molesters into jail for the rest of their lives and to help law enforcement with the tools they need to get the job done."

Ex-Speaker Hastert Enters Prison _ Now Inmate No. 47991-424

By MICHAEL TARM, ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO — Jun 22, 2016, 8:03 PM ET

Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert wheeled himself into a federal prison in Minnesota on Wednesday to serve his 15-month sentence in a hush-money case involving revelations that he sexually abused at least four boys while a high school wrestling coach in Illinois.

The 74-year-old Republican — one of the highest-ranking U.S. politicians to ever go to prison — arrived around noon at the facility in Rochester where he will be known as Inmate No. 47991-424.

Hastert, who began using a wheelchair after falling ill last year, wore a black shirt and camouflage pants as he wheeled himself into the complex between razor-wire fencing. The only person accompanying him was a woman, who followed him carrying crutches, a plastic bag and a small brown box.
