(12,264 posts)Will we call them domestic terrorists then instead of "gun enthusiasts"? These people are terrorists, plain and simple. They aren't hunters, they aren't recreational shooters, they are terrorists. There is a difference.
Sand Rat Expat
(290 posts)You're saying that "gun enthusiasts" in general are "terrorists"?
In that case, there are an awful lot of "terrorists" in the United States, and I guess everyone who posts in the Gungeon is a "terrorist."
If that is indeed what you're saying, don't you think what you're saying is just a wee bit hyperbolic?
redstatebluegirl
(12,264 posts)I have a serious problem with people who have a large amount of automatic weapons. I don't think the automatic weapon ban should have been lifted. I have no problem with people who go hunting, as long as it isn't hunting people, or people who enjoy going to the gun range and shooting for pleasure. I don't understand liking to shoot but I don't take issue with it. I see "gun enthusiasts" as mentioned by police as someone with a garage full of weapons and unreasonable expectations.
If several "gun enthusiasts" get together and decide to go shoot a bunch of liberals who want to "take their guns away" then they become domestic terrorists.
I've never visited Gungeon because I'm not interested.
Sand Rat Expat
(290 posts)Though I'm not entirely sure there are very many people out there with a large supply of automatic weapons, apart from the military. Automatic weapons are heavily restricted by federal law already, so I think you're referring to the assault weapon ban that expired some years ago.
But I mean... when I was a kid, I babysat for a couple who had LOTS of guns. I mean looooooooooooots of guns. They enjoyed collecting them, fixing them, cleaning them, etc. They had his-and-hers sets and all that, and they did target shooting, skeet shooting, deer hunting, etc. I'd call them "gun enthusiasts" because it was their particular hobby, but I don't see any harm in what they were doing. It's their money to spend, and since the guns were legal to own and legally purchased, I don't see why it's anyone's business how many guns they own if they can afford it.
Urchin
(248 posts)They can only shoot one gun at a time anyway. Well, maybe two six guns at the same time, like in Westerns.
Sand Rat Expat
(290 posts)They had loads of guns, but they kept them locked up where their son couldn't possibly get at them. Neither could I, for that matter, and I was in my mid-teens. The guns and the workshop they'd built to tinker with them were essentially in a room-sized safe with three separate locks, and inside that room the guns were in cases with trigger-guards on them. If they kept a handgun out somewhere for home defense or whatever, I never knew of it, let alone had any idea where it was.
Either way, just based on the fact that they collected guns, a lot of people would classify them as "gun-humpers" even though I feel such a term doesn't fit in this case.
The Wielding Truth
(11,411 posts)Like people who collect guillotines or poison or nooses. It's weird. Okay if you hunt you only need a gun or two and if you need protection you only need a gun or two. If you like to go and shoot you can have a gun or two, and any other one you want to play with, should be able to be rented at the shooting range to use there.
Hording weapons is not healthy.

You are talking about semiautomatic weapons. Mechanically there is no difference between a semiautomatic hunting rifle or shotgun and an assault rifle.
This is where it becomes difficult to legally regulate, mechanically they're the same. I personally would like to see an assault weapons ban -because they are weapons do war designed to kill only people. How do you do this?

(12,163 posts)Of course not all gun owners are terrorists. But those gun owners dedicated to blocking sensible reforms of gun law have the blood of innocents on their hands.
They make the job a lot easier for terrorists to get their hands on these weapons engineered to murder mass numbers of people.
Sand Rat Expat
(290 posts)The ones who think the Second Amendment gives them the right to own any type of gun they please, with no restrictions, certainly aren't helping matters.
A lot of the problem is that a sizable chunk of gun owners suspect or believe that the ultimate goal of those of us advocating for common-sense reform is a complete ban and confiscation. As long as that's the case, they'll oppose any reform.
That being the case, the absolutists on the other side of the issue aren't helping matters, either. Until the two sides manage to stop disparaging one another and learn to gain some measure of trust in good intentions, I don't see the status quo changing. We can't use language like "gun-humpers" and "ammosexuals" and then expect these people to be receptive to the points we're trying to make and the changes we're trying to bring about.

(290 posts)Gun owners who don't commit crimes or hurt anyone don't see themselves as part of the problem. Rational or not, their feelings on the matter are "I haven't done anything wrong, so why should I be punished because someone else did?" That's their mindset, so whether we like it or not, they're going to set their feet and resist what they see as unjust punishment and restriction of their rights that they did nothing to earn.
That's the attitude most gun owners have going into this issue, and I unfortunately don't see it changing any time soon.

I'm also getting the impression that pointing out the obvious isn't welcome, either. Vilifying all gun owners in the most extreme terms and then saying "Now why won't they sit down with us and work something out?!" is just a breathtaking example of cognitive dissonance.

Two senior law enforcement officials say the three suspects are so-called "gun enthusiasts" and have no nexus to terror
By Pei-Sze Cheng and Jonathan Dienst
Three people were arrested with multiple loaded guns, rifles and ballistic vests at the Holland Tunnel Tuesday when police stopped them for driving with a cracked windshield, authorities tell NBC 4 New York.
The three individuals, two men in their 50s and a woman in her 20s who may be from Pennsylvania, were stopped on the New Jersey side of the tunnel around 8 a.m., authorities said. A search of their vehicle revealed the weapons cache.
The guns seized included long-range weapons as well as handguns. A camouflage helmet with what appeared to be night goggles was also recovered.
Two senior law enforcement officials say the three suspects are so-called "gun enthusiasts" and have no nexus to terror. There is no known threat.

Cramsey asks the man if he wanted to "start filming a little early" the man says "okay by me"...Cramsey says the girl is in New York staying with someone who overdosed.
An employee at Higher Ground tells WABC that John has been on a mission to fight drug addiction ever since his daughter overdosed last year...We then asked if they were missing any ammunition or weapons. The clerk told us the business was compliant with their license and they don't know of anything missing at this time. According to the Port Authority. the 16-year-old girl has been located, and told them she doesn't need to be rescued.
Cramsey has posted on Facebook about similar rescues in the past. He wrote about one on June 9:
I have a young lady in her early 20s that skipped out of a Court Ordered Rehab in East Stroudsburg and found her way back to Allentown with another young lady from Philadelphia. These girls were literally taken out of the Super 8 Motel...in Allentown...
(One) young lady is currently back out on the streets after getting out in the middle of the night and the Mother believes that she is right back at the same hotel again. I am gearing up and going over there to get this girl out of the grasp of the demons that hold her, but this place is infested with the Demons that sell this crap and trap our kids Souls forever. I Plan on making a statement here, people.
This is NOT Acceptable on my watch. Not with my kids. Not in my Town. Not anymore .
Say it Loud, Say it PROUD! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !
So if his windshield hadn't been cracked and a magazine hadn't been within plain view, Cramsey and Co. would have succeeded in their little mission? Now he's probably sitting in jail wondering why everyone's making a federal case out of it. Well, transporting loaded, improperly stored, and banned weapons across state lines (and probably without permits) IS a Federal case!

The Latest on three people arrested with a cache of guns at the Holland Tunnel (all times local):
1:30 p.m.
Attorneys for three Pennsylvania residents facing numerous charges after weapons were found inside a van stopped outside New York City say they will seek to have the evidence thrown out.
The attorneys for John Cramsey, of Zionsville, 53-year-old Dean Smith, of Whitehall, and 29-year-old Kimberly Arendt, of Lehighton, argued Wednesday the search that uncovered the weapons Tuesday in New Jersey was illegal.
The three pleaded not guilty. A Hudson County judge declined to give them the option of paying 10 percent of their $75,000 cash bail.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press one of the people said they were headed to Brooklyn on Tuesday to "rescue" a teenage girl. The official wasn't authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A New Jersey judge has reduced bail for two Pennsylvania residents who were arrested in June with another man for trying to drive into New York City with a cache of weapons.
Dean Smith and Kimberly Arendt had been jailed on $75,000 cash bail. The judge on Friday reduced their bail to $25,000 cash, with the option of posting 10 percent.
Both families are working to post bond.
The co-defendants and another Pennsylvania resident, John Cramsey, were detained as they prepared to enter the Holland Tunnel.

Trio pleads not guilty in New Jersey gun transport case
By Laila Kearney | NEW YORK
Three Pennsylvania residents pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of attempting to drive an SUV loaded with weapons through a tunnel under the Hudson River into New York, a city with some of the strictest gun restrictions in the United States.
Police stopped the vehicle in which John Cramsey, Dean Smith, and Kimberly Arendt were traveling outside the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey, in June. The tunnel is a major thoroughfare into lower Manhattan. The SUV was covered with stickers and signs supporting the right to bear arms.
The trio entered the pleas to 63 gun-related charges, including possession of handguns without proper permits and possession of drug paraphernalia, in a state court in Jersey City.
