Ecuador president vows to take time on Assange decision

Published on 21 June 2012 - 12:31pm Ecuador's president said Thursday his government would take its time in deciding whether to grant asylum to Julian Assange as the WikiLeaks founder spent a second night at its embassy in London ... Ecuador's deputy foreign minister Marco Albuja said that President Rafael Correa would give his instructions within 24 hours, but Correa later indicated a longer timeframe was possible. "He (Assange) presented his reasons. We are going to verify them... We will take the time necessary," Correa told AFP, adding that it would be done "with absolute seriousness and absolute responsibility" ... Ecuador's deputy foreign minister, Marco Albuja, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation late Wednesday that President Rafael Correa would make a decision within the day. But WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said "it could take hours, it could take days" before a decision was made. Speaking after visiting Assange Thursday, he said Ecuador had asked for information from Britain, Sweden and the United States and would study it before making a decision.
