Obama Leads in Poll as Voters View Romney as Out of Touch
Source: Bloomberg
Barack Obama has opened a significant lead over Mitt Romney in a Bloomberg National Poll that reflects the presumed Republican nominee’s weaknesses more than the president’s strengths. Obama leads Romney 53 percent to 40 percent among likely voters, even as the public gives him low marks on handling the economy and the deficit, and six in 10 say the nation is headed down the wrong track, according to the poll conducted June 15- 18. The survey shows Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has yet to repair the damage done to his image during the Republican primary. Thirty-nine percent of Americans view him favorably, about the same as when he announced his presidential candidacy last June, while 48 percent see him unfavorably -- a 17-percentage point jump during a nomination fight dominated by attacks ads. A majority of likely voters, 55 percent, view him as more out of touch with average Americans compared with 36 percent who say the president is more out of touch. Taken together, the results suggest an unsettled political environment for both Obama and Romney five months from the November election, with voters choosing for now to stick with a president they say is flawed rather than backing a challenger they regard as undefined and disconnected. 1. So here is what Team Obama MUST do in light of these numbers:
|
Last edited Wed Jun 20, 2012, 06:24 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) 1) Continue to drive up Romney's ECONOMIC negatives by CONSTANTLY : a) Kicking the shit out of him on Bain Capital b) Kicking the shit out of him on his failed jobs record in Massachsetts and the fact that he refused to run for re-election c) Kicking the shit out of him on his "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" positions
2) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY on his stated embrace of the Ryan Plan to DESTROY MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY. 3) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY on his stated plans to double down on FAILED trickle down. 4) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY on how he pays half the tax rate as the rest of us and hides his money in the Caymans. 5) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY on all of his flip flops. 6) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY on his failure to commit to specific positions on a whole host of issues. 7) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY as part of the REPUBLICAN WAR ON WOMEN who wants to shut down Planned Parenthood and is opposed to many other pro-women policies. 8) SLAM Romney CONSTANTLY on his stated desire to kill the Dream Act thus further driving up his deficits with Latino voters. THIS IS THE OVERARCHING MESSAGE: Mitt Romney is an out-of-touch FAILURE on economics, would take us backward and make things WORSE, is a flipflopper who does not say where he stands on a number of other issues, and is NOT a champion of the middle class. ---- ROMNEY MUST BE BRANDED THIS WAY NIGHT AND DAY. On the POSITIVE MESSAGE side, Team Obama must stress over and over again that while jobs aren't growing fast enough yet BECAUSE OF THE OBSTRUCTIONIST REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS, we have added over 4 million jobs during 27 months of growth. Obama must show over and again that it is the DO-NOTHING REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS that are standing in the way and that HE IS THE FIGHTER FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS who is for fair taxation and an INVEST-AND-GROW ECONOMY THAT LASTS. That he is the President of FORWARD whereas Romney is the out-of-touch champion of BACKWARD TRICKLE DOWN. |

10. Add To That The Constant Lies Romney Tells
|
The latest was the Romney lie that Obama did nothing regarding the Dream Act when he had a majority in both houses of Congress suggesting it was a failure of leadership.
Well, the Dream Act passed in the House on December 8, 2009 and a few days later was blocked by a Republican filibuster in the Senate, where it got 55 votes but not the super majority 60 needed in that body. It's like if Romney's lips are moving he's lying. |

21. I think the Obama campaign needs to run messaging on parallel tracks that
|
Last edited Wed Jun 20, 2012, 11:38 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) evokes on the one hand Harry S. Truman's whistle-stop campaign against Dewey and the 'Do-Nothing Congress' in 1948. And then run a parallel campaign that evokes LBJ's 1964 spot against Goldwater and the little girl pulling daisy petals, while voice over counts down to a mushroom cloud. (Commercial only ran once before it was pulled but it has since achieved iconic status.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_%28advertisement%29 (Contains a video clip of the daisy petal ad) For the latter campaign, start with Seamus the dog, morph to John Lauber (the bullying victim), segue to women being stopped by Mitt-as-fake-cop and culminate with victims of Bain. Subliminal (or not so subliminal) message: Romney is an abuser. Let Romney deny he abuses animals and people. As LBJ is reported to have said of one of his early opponents, "I don't care whether he actually is a pig fucker, as long as he denies that he's fucking pigs" (or words to that effect) |

6. I could not believe anyone would be able to vote for Bush after those debates
|
Yet, they didn't seem to hurt him all that much.
Romney has been awful in the Republican debates - Newt seemed to run circles around him, and the others, far-right as they were, at least seemed to believe in whatever they were pushing. Romney just came across as totally disingenuous. But, of course, I'm sure he'll have some people helping him with that. Probably give him a few "zingers" to use, and that's what will make the press, such as it is. It's a long way to the election - but it's nice to seem some positive polling data for Obama. |

appeared to have one or two drinks before each debate.
Seems like he was wired in the back or something like that -- please refresh my memory. Bet Rmoney will need someone to pull his strings to get on stage with Obama -- and even than, it won't help. Bring On The Debates! |

And I still worry that the purpose of those polls is to make it appear close enough that they GOP will steal another election.

9. Truthfully, I don't like any of them
|
They all are capable and willing to skew the sampling to get a result that favors their objective.
I think this particular result, is close to what I feel is the real sentiment in the country based on interactions with people. But we always like the polls that show results favorable to our own. I just have this sinking feeling that the polls will be skewed to aid in election fraud. |

8. Not Knowing What A Doughnut Is Called Shows Disconnection
|
As has his constant badmouthing of everything. Also, his unwillingness to say what he would do and how he would do it and all of his secret plans shows him to be undefined. Americans may be focusing a little earlier this year than usual to show this much clarity now. That is not to say that it couldn't change on a dime but Romney has boxed himself in and his Etch-a-sketch may not be working to his advantage right now.

president. The more I see of him, the more he gets on my nerves. He's such a phony, and incredibly out of touch. Are Americans really so stupid they can't see it, and can't see just how dysfunctional and radical the GOP has become?

17. That's a great point
|
Low-information voters view him relatively neutrally - someone who did well in business, etc - until they hear him speak. Especially when he tries to talk extemporaneously.
Although, I always thought that would be the undoing of the Bush candidacy as well but it didn't quite turn out that way. |

18. After watching the piece on voter machine hacking,
|
I am convinced that polls do not matter. This election will be stolen! There is a 45 minute piece playing on DU now, by a computer security consultant whose job it is to make our credit cards secure. He explains how it is done so that even I can understand. He shows how credit cards are protected and the lengths the criminals go to steal this info (very high tech). Then he explains that there is NO system in place to protect the integrity of the votes. Nothing, zilch nada! He demonstrates how Ohio was taken from Kerry and who did it. Like he says, they are willing to spend a billion dollars to get their guy elected, they are willing to spend a couple of million hacking it to guarantee it! This election will be hacked. The 2 brothers that each have their own voter machine companies to rig the local bidding on the machines, are fundamentalist Christians who want to see America as a Christian state complete with stonings etc. It is crazy but true!

The Republicans trashed Kerry for windsurfing but they go ahead and nominate a guy with a dancing horse. |
