British foreign secretary: Ship headed for Syria appears to have turned back toward Russia By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, June 19, 12:20 PM LONDON — A British company said Tuesday it had cancelled insurance for a Russian-operated ship it said was carrying munitions to Syria — a shipment the British government says included refurbished military helicopters. U.K.-based insurer Standard Club said in a statement that it had been made aware that a Russian ship, MV Alaed — currently off the Scottish coast — was carrying munitions destined for Syria, in clear breach of its rules. “We consequently informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage,” it said in a statement. <snip> An article on the website Maritime Bulletin, run by Russian maritime expert Mikhail Voytenko, said revoking the insurance would have little impact, since Russia does not support EU sanctions against weapons shipments to Syria. 1. That headline is misleading.
|
No where in the story does it say that the ship turned back to Russia.

6. But it already had been reported elsewhere

eg http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=147073
Mr Hague told the House of Commons: "We have in place a European Union arms embargo on Syria.
"We discourage anyone else from supplying arms to Syria. "We've had discussions with Russia about that specifically and I'm pleased that the ship that was reported to be carrying arms to Syria has now turned back apparently towards Russia." It was thought that the vessel had stopped for a time off the Western Isles, before later passing Shetland as it headed for Russia. |

2. Next step

The ship heads back and the the cargo is reloaded onto a Russian navy cargo ship...which leaves with the appropriate escorts and makes a port of call at the naval base of Tartus.

4. I doubt that there was a meeting of minds.
|
Putin is determined to keep Assad in power - no matter the number of people slaughtered. A Russian women apparently when talking to a Syrian woman said that it is Chechneya all over again.
And this is where this country is heading - autocratic, all money-at-top, rule where the interests of the people mean diddly-squat. |

5. I have little faith in the terrorists that are Chechneya
|
nothing like it.
however there is some mixture of terrorists among Syria.. this is more like a compressed section of baddies and goodies in the same spot like Israel vs Palestine ..... Neither Israel nor Palestine are innocent. Like the Civil War in Iraq, there isn't exactly a side one wants to take. It's complicated. |
