Newt Gingrich takes his fourth ‘no-adultery pledge’

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Rhiannon12866 (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich this week signed a pledge to uphold conservative values from the Iowa-based group The Family Leader and vowed to restrict federal dollars from paying for abortion overseas, uphold the Defense of Marriage Act and stay true to his wife, Callista.

"I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman," Gingrich wrote in a letter to The Family Leader announcing his support of the group's pledge. "I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.

That would actually be the fourth time Gingrich has taken a no-adultery pledge. He took the first one in 1962 when he married Jackie Battley, and then again in 1981 when he married Marianne Ginther and made a third one to Callista Bisek (now Gingrich) in 2000.

Gingrich, whose first two marriages ended because he was having an affair a woman who would later become his wife, addressed his history of infidelity at the ABC News/Yahoo Republican debate on Saturday, where he said that he has sought forgiveness for his mistakes.

26. That doesn't sound like a good drinking game to me

Drinking games are supposed to be fun. They are not supposed to end in massive alcohol poisoning, which would happen if you drank every time a Republican cheated on his wife.

Taking a drink every time a homophobic Republican comes out as gay would be an okay game...it happens often enough to keep it interesting, but not often enough to kill you.

2. Wow, Newt's been breaking marriages pledges that he made before I was even born.

And I was born in 1964!!

And then he made the 2nd one in 1981, they same year I graduated high school!!!

And then he made the 3rd one in 2000 ... right around the time my 3rd and final child was born.

That's scary ... I can connect key events in my life directly with Newt's various "marriage pledges".

3. But this time it's different--I promise.

He will not have time to screw around on his wife--he will be too busy screwing the electorate.

Probably because Callista's hair varnish bills are starting to add up.

12. I don't know which is the more ridiculous concept:

This multiple-times-taken pledge or the fact that there are women (plural) who would willfully have sex with Newt Gingrich, power and money notwithstanding.

13. What an idiot

Just when the media is taking him as almost half serious in his run for president (and considering how absurd the repukes are, that is no mean feat) he would say something this stupid.

Isn't it already a given that you are supposed to maintain fidelity in most marriages? Or does Newt have an open marriage or some kind of contractual arrangement in the pre-nup? Ridiculous.
