Reporter From 1991 Audio Recording Says Trump's Denials Raise Questions About Character
Source: ABC News
The former People Magazine reporter who interviewed Donald Trump's alleged spokesman "John Miller" in 1991 -- and immediately felt it was actually Trump himself -- says his denials that he masqueraded as his own spokesman raise questions about his character.
"It shows he's a liar right now. And that distresses me as the candidate running for the Republican party," Carswell said in an interview with ABC News' Mary Bruce. "If this is the kind of character that -- of a man that you're going to be voting for come November, I would be suspicious if he tells lies.
"I mean, he's punking me," Carswell said. "He's punking the country."
In 1991, Carswell spoke with a Trump spokesman named "John Miller" while reporting on Trump's divorce from Ivana Trump and his relationship with Marla Maples. She says she knew immediately that Miller was actually Trump, and reached out to three people, including Maples, to confirm her suspicions. Trump ultimately apologized to her, she said.

The crazy thing about Trump is that he is caught red-handed. Even admits it in the story in question, though he calls it a joke, but then denies it now.

(880 posts)Please note that she says that Drumpf is punking her and punking the nation. This is what we are missing. He leaked the recording himself and then denied it was him to troll the media. We're getting punked! Not very presidential!!!

(3,585 posts)I didn't know that, now I'm really interested in this and it's effect.
I think he is making a mistake to lie about it.

(880 posts)But don't you see, he leaked it to the media, denied it was him on the recording, even got "disconnected" while on a phone interview with the paper as soon as this question came up. All for media coverage. And the media that ran with this and is acting like it will hurt his campaign are going to look quite foolish in the end. DONALD already looks foolish. He needs no help. Andy Kaufman for President??? Really?

(6,419 posts)Same rambling, bogus, I-don't-know-much-about-it subterfuge. So to me this goes to confirm that is Klan sympathies are real, just like he's obviously lying here

(1,307 posts)Carswell believes Trump himself leaked the audio (she had only one tape of it, and believes she lost it when moving.) She believes the recording released was one that Trump must have recorded at he time of the interview. why would he do that?

(12,904 posts)I don't understand how leaking this tape would help his campaign. Has he forgotten that he is running for President?
Is there a purpose to the trolling, or just trolling for attention?
BlueNoMatterWho
(880 posts)It looks as if he is trolling for the sake of dominating the news cycle(attention) but the way the media covered this one will turn out to be quite embarrassing for them. They bought it hook, line and sinker.

(1,307 posts)How did the media "fall" for it? It's real, it's Trump. he admitted it was him decades ago in court records and even in the recording he speaks in first person. Then he lies about it being him earlier this week. I don't understand why he would leak the tape unless he wanted it to drown out his refusal to release tax returns, as was suggested above. Or, as some people suggest, he is intentionally destroying his campaign in order to help Clinton.

(17,382 posts)I think Trump has discovered in the course of the Republican primaries that there is no such thing as bad publicity. To keep folks from actually focusing on the issues, just keep on staying in front of the headlines.

I seems unlikely that Trump supporters will view this 25-year-old attempt to "punk" the establishment media as particularly scandalous; It is more likely to enhance their perception of him as an outsider, and as being attacked for his supposed independence.
Political campaigns don't suffer generally from being presented as that of an underdog.

While having done this would be an embarrassing story for any remotely acceptable candidate - going so far as to include people like Bush and Romney - for Trump, this is almost a break from the questions that come from the NYT article on his disgusting behavior over his life towards women. Not to mention, this is a man who tried to get military credit because his parents sent him to a military style high school that was basically for the wayward children of the elite.
For at least a few decades, I have realized that I really can not look at the Republicans running and have any idea of who would win. However, I am still stunned that the man who made ugly faces as his opponents spoke, spewed hatred, and said things that were blatant lies or impossible actually won the primaries easily. That he now seems to have some traction among the independents is beyond scary. This country is in a very scary time.
So, pretending to be your own employee and speaking of yourself in third person is pretty weird, on the Donald Trump scale, it is on the almost normal end.
