Georgia governor vetoes campus carry bill

Source: CNN

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed controversial legislation on Tuesday that would have allowed college students to carry concealed guns onto campuses with some restrictions.State lawmakers sent House Bill 859 to Deal on March 28. Under Georgia law, he had 40 days to sign it or veto it, or it would automatically become law.

Calling himself a "lifetime defender" of Second Amendment rights, Deal pushed back on the campus carry bill, asking the General Assembly to address various concerns he had with the bill. Among those concerns, Deal said in a statement, were K-12 students who also attend college classes, on-campus daycare centers, university disciplinary hearings and faculty and administrative offices.
Among those who spoke out against the bill were University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank M. Huckaby and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe.

Huckaby said during testimony before the house Judiciary Committee that he understood both sides of the argument but still opposed the legislation. He noted that Georgia's university students already enjoyed the protection of well-trained police forces, whose jobs could be made more difficult if the bill becomes law.

I'm a new Georgian, escaped from Kansas. Yes, there is that thing here, but it's totally different. Kansas City was the most segregated place i've ever lived. The history of the civil rights movement in Atlanta has an effect on the state.

The Latest: Deal Also Vetoes Bill Allowing Weapons in Church

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
ATLANTA — May 3, 2016, 6:51 PM ET

The Latest on legislation to allow anyone with a permit to carry concealed handguns on Georgia campuses (all times local):

6:30 p.m.

Georgia's Republican governor has rejected legislation permitting people to carry weapons inside churches without penalty.

It would have amended state law, which currently bans guns in churches, to say that people who carry weapons into church would not be in violation of the law as long as they leave the church when told to do so. The proposal is separate from another bill vetoed Tuesday permitting concealed handguns on college campuses.

Deal signed legislation two years ago expanding locations where weapons can be carried. That bill allowed guns in bars. Deal said this year's proposal "breaches a compromise" from that time. Houses of worship should be protected places free of weapons, he said.

This will not set well with the hard core gun nuts here (and their gun industry masters). It means no uptick in gun sales during 'back to school' timeframe.
