GOP Front Group Suing States To Force Voter Purges

Source: Think Progress

A Tea Party group is suing states to try to purge their voter rolls before November’s election. True the Vote, an arm of the King Street Patriots, has filed a suit against the state of Indiana, alleging that the state has poor “list maintenance” of its voters.

This suit kicks off a series of state-focused attempts by True the Vote, serving as a co-plaintiff with the conservative “watchdog” group Judicial Watch, to limit voter turnout this election season. Voter purges may be presented under the guise of fairer elections, but the idea of “cleaning” a list usually results in legal voters — overwhelmingly voters of color — being kicked off the rolls.

True the Vote’s agenda is clearly political, as can be evidenced from their website that lists Wisconsin’s recall election as a ‘victory’ (despite day-of claims of voter fraud) and Florida as an upcoming target. Other states on the list for lawsuits include more than half are swing states in play this election season:

According to a Judicial Watch investigation voter rolls in the following states appear to contain the names of individuals who are ineligible to vote: Mississippi, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Florida, Alabama, and California. As part of its 2012 Election Integrity Project, Judicial Watch has put these states on notice that they must clean up their voter registration lists or face Judicial Watch lawsuits.

3. "True the Vote" is a misnomer.

Obviously they meant to say "Skew the Vote". At the risk of sounding ungracious, I hope they all get the plague.

19. Their limit is the amount of money the US CoC, Koch brothers and ALEC funnel to them.

And that's an awful lot of unaccountable money they're going to pour in to defeat Obama and all Democrats. It worked in 2010 playing both ends and it may again.

7. After the 2000 theft

The Dem's did nothing about it. They had 12 years to do what these morons are doing in months time, but only the legal way. 2010 may have been a different outcome had they moved to register everyone easier. We should have gotten rid of ALL computers for elections. Hand counts ONLY. Make special buildings for the vote so they don't get lost or forgotten, and make voting a month before the elections, but tallies everyday signed and witnessed with video surveillance, and locked away.

Had the 2000 vote been more publicized about the fraud, we may have been able to even get the Repukes to sign on to new rules of handling the votes.

10. So now the little patriots (fascists) are running around hoping they can pull their stunts.

I seem to remember something about how voting is a state's right, and how we can't just have the federal government step in. Darn.

15. This will backfire.

The right to a vote is considered by the majority as FREEDOM. Don't fuck with America's freedoms. Even goppers will agree with that. Are the GOP that afraid of losing the Presidental elections? My guess is YES.

21. In order to win a suit, wouldn't they need to prove ...

... that there is actual fraud that results from the "poor list maintenance" they allege?

I don't see why a judge would even agree to hear such a frivolous case.

23. The people could easily win at every ballot.

The 30 to 35% voter turnout is a national disgrace. If they succeed in removing even a small number of registered participating voters the results change. Remember, as an example Governor Perry in Texas was basically put into office by about 17% of eligible voters. That is one in 5 Texas citizens. Women in Texas have a terrible turnout rate for some reason, if they show up and vote their interests, then the right loses...

25. Every state have voters that are not legally registered.

At their current residence. And many are legally registered but appear not to be because of clerical errors on the part of the county clerk's office. Some might be because the voter doesn't provide complete information such as their apartment. When voter registration forms are filled out with a pen there is the problem of illegible handwriting too. There are probably many that are now living in another state but they did not cancel their voter registration in Indiana.

This should be thrown out because all voter registration offices are also required to follow federal laws regarding voter registration.

There are some changes that are needed. Such as automatic cancellation of voter registration when the person gets a drivers license in another state. Once a new drivers license is issued they are I believe require to turn in the drivers license from their old state. The new state should send those old drivers license back to the original state and based on that cancel voter registration.

Another change that should be required is that every government voter registration office that processes the forms should have Democratic and Republican deputies that have to sign off on what happens in the office.
