Retailer Target says transgender people can use bathroom of their choice

By Nathan Layne
April 19, 2016

(Reuters) - Target Corp said on Tuesday that transgender employees and customers could use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, becoming the first big retailer to weigh in on an issue at the center of a heated national debate.

The move came after North Carolina last month became the first U.S. state to require transgender people to use restrooms and changing rooms in schools and other public facilities that match their sex at birth rather than their gender identity. Lawmakers in some other states have also floated similar laws.

The law in North Carolina does not affect private-sector businesses, which are free to set their own policies, Governor Pat McCrory said in issuing an executive order related to the measure earlier this month.

Backers of the legislation in the Republican-controlled North Carolina legislature say it is meant to protect privacy rights and keep children and women safe from sexual predators.

Write the law, saying that. It shall be illegal for anyone to disguise themselves to enter a bathroom/locker room for the purpose of stalking, harassing, peeping and/or attacking other occupants for sexual pleasure. You will be charged based on the nature of your crime as a peeping tom, child molester, sexual predator/offender. Direct the law at the true nature of the perpetrator. Not at gender identity.

The law that Charlotte passed did not endanger anybody. All laws protecting people from assault, etc., were still clearly in force. Rather, the law that Charlotte passed protected a vulnerable group of people - transgenders - who are at much greater risk of assault in bathrooms than anybody else.

HB2 is a cynical lying bigoted attack on a vulnerable population, used as an excuse to grab power from local communities in NC.

Thank you for pointing out one of the logical fallacies in HB2. If the lawmakers had really wanted to protect people, they would have written a very different law.

That's what is so nuts. Plenty of people don't have a copy of their BC and even those who do don't carry it with them.

His birth certificate would say Female (if it hasn't been changed), but something tells me they wouldn't want him using the women's restroom.

with lots of people milling about. They always feel very safe. (And I'm fine with transgender people using the bathroom they gender identify with.)

Some store bathrooms are in the backs of stores, down narrow deserted hallways or not near any other people. As a woman, I don't ever feel completely safe using them.

only apply to the trans community. Gender neutrality, on the other hand, is equal rights for all.

At one time, blacks were discriminated against in a similar fashion by being barred from using "whites only" bathrooms. The solution was not to pass laws that set up special rules that only applied to blacks that allowed blacks to choose whether they wanted to use a "Whites Only or Colored Only" restroom. The problem was solved by doing away with race segregated restrooms period. Equal access for all. The same needs to be done for gender segregated restrooms.
