Panama Papers: US launches criminal inquiry into tax avoidance claims

Source: The Guardian

The US Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into the widespread international tax avoidance schemes exposed by the Panama Papers leak, published by the Guardian and other journalistic partners.

Preet Bharara, the US attorney for Manhattan, said he had “opened a criminal investigation regarding matters to which the Panama Papers are relevant”.

Bharara has written to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which coordinated the unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from offshore law firm Mossack Fonseca, to ask for further information to assist with his criminal investigation..
...
The US attorney general’s office was unable to provide any further details about the criminal investigation, because it is ongoing.

so they can make sure that any of the 1% here in the US are not indicted by the media. My opinion of course. It shouldn't take a so called independent news organization to break this story. Remember this the same DOJ that looked the other way when Wall St. crashed the economy. Steal a loaf of bread and you are called a criminal. Steal millions of dollars and you are called a great business man. AKA job creator.

Based on recent DOJ actions, this could very well mean that they'll be prosecuting any whistleblowers they can lay hands on.

What a good idea.

Maybe its because Erik is no longer in charge. He seemed to work for the corporations.

that our new AG will be any different. Loretta Lynch is cut from the same cloth as Holder. Obama was funded by Wall Street and appointed so many Wall Streeters to high positions, it has become common to give them a big bonus before they go to their position, and a big promotion and bonus when they get done with their government tour of duty!

Of course our Chief Justice, John Roberts, didn't see any Quid Pro Quo going on just like racism was over so no need for one of the most important parts of the Voting Rights Act!
