NYPD Officer Indicted in Shooting of Ramarley Graham, Unarmed Bronx Man

Source: NBC New York

An NYPD officer has been indicted on manslaughter charges in the shooting death of an unarmed 18-year-old in his Bronx home in February, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Sources familiar with the case tell NBC 4 New York that Officer Richard Haste is being charged with first-degree manslaughter. He is expected to turn himself in on Wednesday.

Security video shows Graham entering his home, and police running after him. Police at the time said officers witnessed a drug deal and pursued Graham, believing he had a gun.

They went in and found him in the second-floor bathroom, and ended up shooting him in the chest. He died shortly afterward.

Police said later that Graham was not found with a gun.

2. Well, at least in this police killing there is an indictment.

That's unusual. What's even more unusual is winning a conviction. But this is a step in the right direction. An 18-year-old kid is dead over nothing.

A New York police officer who shot and killed unarmed Bronx teenager Ramarley Graham in his bathroom has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges.

Richard Haste, the first serving NYPD officer to face criminal charges for a fatal shooting since 2006, turned himself in and was arraigned at a Bronx criminal court on charges of first and second degree manslaughter over the killing of the 18-year-old.

Haste, a four-year veteran of the force, was released on $50,000 bail. He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted.

"Officer Haste's actions were neither reasonable nor justified," said assistant district attorney Donald Levin at Wednesday's hearing.
