3. what really sucks is that it crashed in an area that's all nature preserve
|
So there will be a considerable environmental impact.

Has been for years.

That's their line, not mine.

5. What a total waste of resources. Goofing around with military toys.
|
That energy could be productive. We could have good schools and healthcare. But no, we've got people in rooms sitting behind joysticks, testing out their new hydraulic circuit. Or whatever they were doing. Whatever it was it was counterproductive to a society in need.

12. My dad certainly wasn't "goofing around" all those years during his USAF career
|
when he war flying drones. They are constantly testing and developing variations on the reconnaissance technology.
I take personal offense at your smartass attitude. |

15. Wow, I thought I knew you better. I thought you were joking.
|
I will not change my stance on this. And it isn't smart ass.
I'm proud that my great uncles were conscientious objectors in World War 1. There is nothing good about war or the money spent to support it. Every dollar spent on it is a dollar not spent on productive and helpful efforts. And that doesn't even take into account the massive ecological damage done. |

16. I'm not apologizing for the fact that my father served his country honorably and well for 23 years.
|
He was a navigator and electronic warfare officer with expertise in radar countermeasures. And he hated war. He felt the best offense was a good DEFENSE.
Military dollars paid for my education via his paychecks. A person can serve in the military and NOT be a warmongering thug. My dad was a feminist before it was cool, and a Democrat from a family of Democrats. His military career brought him out of poverty. Oh, and his death from cancer at age 47 may very well have had something to do with exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. But go right ahead hating military folks. |

17. OK. I never said I hated military folks. You put that in my mouth.
|
I'm not going to continue this dialog with you as you seem to be very charged up about it. I hear you. I know you're a good person. I do my best to not contribute to war in ever possible way.

6. It was a surveillance drone, in essence.
|
Found more info--it was a GLOBAL HAWK: http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/11/us/maryland-drone-crash/index.html
The unmanned RQ-4A Global Hawk drone went down during a routine training flight from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, according to Jamie Cosgrove, a spokeswoman for the Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons Program at the base.
The Navy only has two of 'em, apparently (pic above is a USAF one) --and one crashed. They aren't cheap. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_RQ-4_Global_Hawk |

Just saying! Especially since they tend to recruit avid video game players, who probably have the mentality that they have multiple lives.

I can tell you that the training they go through is pretty much second to none and that they take their jobs very seriously. The idea that they are a bunch of slackers who's best claim to fame is being good at Halo is, to put it bluntly, stupid.

13. My dad, a LtCol at the time, was one of those "slackers" in the AF, flying the drones.
|
When one went down in the desert, it was a big hairy deal. Back in the late 70s when he worked on them they were really really expensive.

The only difference is that they don't die if their craft does. Of course, the old career can take a mortal hit, but that's not quite the same.
