'Green Acres' actor Frank Cady dies at 96

Source: LA Times

By Claire Noland

June 10, 2012, 1:22 p.m.
Frank Cady, 96, a character actor who played Hooterville general-store proprietor Sam Drucker on the TV sitcoms “Green Acres” and “Petticoat Junction,” died Friday at his home in Wilsonville, Ore., said his daughter, Catherine Turk. No specific cause was given.

Like Mr. Haney, Eb Dawson, Hank Kimball and Arnold the Pig, Cady’s Sam Drucker was a supporting cast member on “Green Acres” to lawyer Oliver Wendell Douglas and his socialite wife, Lisa, played by Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor, who had ditched the high life in New York City for the charms of a farm in Hooterville.

Cady played Drucker for the entire run of “Green Acres” on CBS, from 1965 to 1971, when it was canceled. The show continued to air for years in syndication. He also portrayed Drucker on “Petticoat Junction” and “The Beverly Hillbillies,” programs that shared some secondary characters. He reprised the role for the 1990 TV movie “Return to Green Acres.”

Next time you watch a Frank Capra movie, Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, etc., look at the supporting players. They are incredibly talented.

RIP Mr. Cady. You brought us much laughter.

Green Acres is one of the goofy sixties sitcoms that has actually held up over the years and is still entertaining. I loved it as a kid, and I still enjoy the reruns when they're available.

There are only two left - Tom Lester who played Eb, and the actress who played Ralph Monroe (I can't recall her name).

They were my childhood tv friends as well. Sam Drucker was a kind soul just the kind of person you'd want for a neighbor if he has been a real person instead of a tv character. Mr. Cady, rest in peace.

It felt like a safe place.

Green Acres wasn't so much sophisticated as Deliverance with a laugh track.

Sold my parents their home in Encino, CA in 1961. Actors sold homes on the side during their down times. I was 11 years old at the time and remember him well.

There was a time when Republicans would have picked Mr. Douglas as a candidate and Democrats would have recruited Sam Drucker but since the DLC came along and Newt came out with his "Word List" both the Democrats and Republicans would try to recruit Mr. Haney.
