Secular activist who criticised Islamism hacked to death in Bangladesh

Source: The Guardian

A Bangladeshi law student who criticised Islamism on his Facebook page has been murdered, police said on Thursday, the latest in a series of killings of secular activists and bloggers in the country.

Nazimuddin Samad, 28, had been on a hit list of 84 atheist bloggers that a group of radical Islamists drew up and sent to Bangladesh’s interior ministry.

“At least four assailants hacked Nazimuddin Samad’s head with a machete on Wednesday night. As he fell down, one of them shot him with a pistol from close range. He died on the spot,” deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan police Syed Nurul Islam told AFP.

“It is a case of targeted killing. But no group has claimed responsibility,” Islam said, adding police were investigating whether Samad was murdered for his writing.

which is impressive as Christians only outnumber Muslims by about 8% of total global population. (TGP)

2.2B Christians (31% of TGP) versus 1.6B Muslims (23% of TGP) but terrorist acts committed by Christians (both in the name of religion and not in the name of religion) outpace those by Muslims (both in the name of religion and not in the name of religion) by a margin of about 2:1.

Of course, it gets a lot less coverage when Christians commit atrocities in the name of religion than when Muslims commit atrocities in the name of religion, in part because of target-asymmetry (many targets of Muslim political and religious violence in the name of religion are Westernized major cities and targets whereas most Christian political and religious violence in the name of religion is by members of the global poor against other members of the global poor.) and in part because of media distortion...when some extreme-RW end-timer attacks a movie theater or the US Capitol, or ambushes LEOs...it's rarely reported as religiously-motivated violence as opposed to attribution to some other cause.

Exactly what qualifying events are you using when you describe this so called "christian terrorism" that's double the amount of incidents spurned on explicitly by Islamic theology? I have yet to read of any movie theater shooter screaming "praise jesus" when they opens fire.

less than has been caused by Puerto Rican separatists. Really.

It's also less than those caused by Jewish extremists, Armenian extremists, eco-terrorists, animal-rights activists, Cuban exiles, Communists, and Venezuelan revolutionaries. That's just the US though.

Violent Islamists are however outpacing white supremacists, US segregationists, gun-nuts and RW terrorists, though those numbers are in dispute because the FBI goes out of it's way to attribute any other cause...if you're a neo-Nazi open-carry environmentalist, you're being classified as "environmental." For that matter, Ted Kaczynski's and Tim McVeigh's respective violent acts are classified as eco-terrorism and Jared Loughner's attempted assassination of Gabby Giffords as "Other" and attributed to mental illness. Of the three, Unabomber was a Luddite anarchist (which would put his motivational beliefs at both extremes of the political spectrum) and the other two we're explicitly engaging in conservative-motivated political violence. That's not even touching on Rudolph and Dear.

Outside the US though, the numbers are stark. Christian political violence in Africa alone has killed, abducted or disappeared (and probably killed) more people than Al Qaeda or Daesh globally since 1/2014. More than 500,000 (...and the world pays no attention) A large part of that is of course Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army. It's only the US and Europe where the ratio of Christian and Muslim violence even appears to be close in ratio. When we look at South Asia, we find that it's roughly on-par in that region with Hindu political violence.

It's the bias of your Western perspective and the result of shitty media reporting that you think Muslim extremism is that much more prevalent than other causes of terrorism. It does not however have any basis in fact.

was watching videos about the early civilizations and it appears the gods "just are" to them. They are the science of 3000 BC or AD 1400.

In modern times we can be agnostic because we know so many scientific explanations. But that option of agnosticism would not have even occurred to those primitive people. The Sun was obviously a god - drought or flooding affected survival and there was no way to explain bad things happening except the gods being angry. An earthquake to that early a person had to be an angry god. No understanding of geology there to explain it otherwise.

They would do rituals and even human sacrifice - thinking they had to appease the gods so they could survive and stop the drought, etc.

Then it became natural to tell stories about the gods and start up these more complicated religions with stories and characterizations leading to the Abrahamic religions or the Greek/Roman gods. Religion maybe reached its top peak in the medieval era in Europe or Islamic countries even today where they have total control of government. Then they began to decline with the separation of church and state and the rise of science.

In the Muslim world, social coercion and violent retribution against the "different" is the huge factor that keeps whole populations chained to fundy ignorance. (I make an exception for Iran's citizens, who in my experience are a free-thinking bunch.)

But Muslims who come to the US in SMALL numbers, and make good, and are forced to interact with the non-fundy surrounding people (those of us who believe wacky things like "It's not a crime to draw cartoons" and "It's okay to criticize your parents' religion" and "your wife and daughter are people, not possessions&quot do, slowly and over generations, tend to change. A few kids are radicalized; a greater number march in step to please their parents - but I am betting the greatest number drift toward the western mean of non-fundamentalism.

In our free society - unlike in most Muslim lands - Muslim-born kids actually can think their own thoughts and even speak up or slip away from home. (This is especially the males; females are policed and punished much harder, in the name of the father's "honor.&quot

What this means, is that Muslim immigration to the west may create the cradle for a new, less murderous Islam. Or so I tell myself.

(Of course, for a view of what happens when Muslim immigration is uncontrolled and Muslim mainstream beliefs are merely transported wholesale into western nations, talk to the Forced Marriage Unit in the UK or the Jews of Malmo, Sweden. I mean, the *former* Jews of Malmo, Sweden. So, yeah, immigration is a two-edged sword.)

You are right of course. Most Muslims coming to the west have a better chance long term of becoming less radicalized. Exceptions exist of course, but even in the big UK enclaves, you have less chance of being killed for apostasy in Bradford than Dhaka.

The trouble is, recent refugee issues aside, those immigrants are mostly the better educated, wealthier and more western-oriented. Kind of reflexively definitive that if you hate the west and wish to live under Islamic law, you don't leave Bangladesh to move to Bangor.

So what would happen if they stayed instead? While progress would be slower in their home country, losing a decent number of the more secular (a relative term) and enlighted to emigration to the west certainly makes it far slower and in fact negative. The fewer restrained voices in Bangladesh stay there, the more the fundy loons dominate and monopolize. I'm not a xenophobic loon who wants to refuse all Muslim immigrants, and Allah knows anybody with secular sympathies will be better off here than in the Islamic theocracies, but if we start seeing an appreciable segment of the more moderate segments of society leave those places, what chance do they ever have of becoming more moderate societies? The best answer for the short term - integration in the west for the non-radicalized - is the worst answer long term - abandoning their homelands to unchallenged radicals.

A basic problem, also, is that a small group of machete wielding maniacs have a huge impact on stifling freedom. Wheras a small - or even large - group of peaceful secular bloggers have almost zero impact on stifling fundamentalism.

We are seeing this in the west. In spite of the fact that violent Muslim fanatics are a miniscule part of our population, look at how they've stifled freedom of expression. Now its: Don't draw the wrong cartoon! Don't burn a hunk of paper, if the word 'quran' is written on it! Don't fly the Israeli flag in Europe - that might make some Muslims beat you up! Don't celebrate Jewish holidays in public if there are Muslims nearby! If female, you are now pressured to dress modestly and stay indoors after dark. Don't let an ex-Muslim feminist speak at a college graduation.

Et cetera.

So, that brings up another question:
Is Bangladesh going to turn slowly into a free society like the west?
Or is the west going to turn more and more into Bangladesh?

(Basic rule: the people willing to commit murder are the people who get their way. The rest of us generally tiptoe around trying not to make them mad.)

A lot of them have said some variation on the following, there is nothing that will reprogram a young Arab's brain quite like being seduced by the west. Thrusting a young man alone into the west can be dangerous, being lonely and homesick can make him gravitate to the mosque. But fleeting and enticing experiences in the west leave an unshakable change in thinking about everything.

And I have seen Saudi college boys rowdy it up just like westerners on campus. No surprise there.

But you know what? They all go back to KSA in the end. And if they rise up to fight for secularism or the rights of women or atheists or artists in their own country once they get back home, I'm surely not seeing those results. I willingly believe they learn to drink alcohol, watch porn, read Shakespeare, .... but they also want to maintain their godlike control over their wives and children and servants.

Saudi males want western freedoms for themselves - of course; what else is new? - but unless they also learn to want it for the vast underclass that they tread on, what does it matter?

We have a Saudi working for us who left Saudi Arabia because his wife's extended family was extremely vocal in their disapproval of the raising of their daughters, particularly that they were fluent in English and that frightened them.

This guy at the age of fifteen was sent to live with relatively secular relatives in London during the first Gulf War and when he returned to Saudi Arabia the following summer there was just no way back psychologically. He had gone to rock concerts, he had talked to girls, he had been to a beach in France. He wasn't planning his life around prayers and neither was anyone else he met in London. In London he had met Muslim girls who were animated and interesting and just had a spark of life in them. He found the women in Saudi Arabia alien to him afterwards, just silent and anonymous ghosts, one could rarely have a conversation of more than yes or no questions. He fortunately met a British educated Saudi woman and they married almost immediately.

When they took their daughters to Disney World in 2005 they saw the same "no way back" in them even as children.

What happens when a set of ideas which exhort it's spreading in the human population, also contains absolute prohibition against copying errors?

This: Asad Shah death: Man admits killing shopkeeper because he 'disrespected' Islam

Mr Shah was not killed, as initially thought, for being nice to christians at easter. No, he was killed because he followed Islam V1.2

His killer instructed his lawyer to read the following statement in a UK court:

"My client Mr Tanveer Ahmed has specifically instructed me that today, 6 April 2016, to issue this statement to the press, the statement is in the words of my client.

"This all happened for one reason and no other issues and no other intentions.

"Asad Shah disrespected the messenger of Islam the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Mr Shah claimed to be a Prophet.

"When 1400 years ago the Prophet of Islam Muhammad peace be upon him has clearly said that 'I am the final messenger of Allah there is no more profits or messengers from God Allah after me.

'I am leaving you the final Quran. There is no changes. It is the final book of Allah and this is the final completion of Islam'.

'There is no more changes to it and no one has the right to claim to be a Prophet or to change the Quran or change Islam.'

"It is mentioned in the Quran that there is no doubt in this book no one has the right to disrespect the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and no one has the right to disrespect the Prophet of Islam Muhammad Peace be upon him.

"If I had not done this others would and there would have been more killing and violence in the world.

"I wish to make it clear that the incident was nothing at all to do with Christianity or any other religious beliefs even although I am a follower of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him I also love and respect Jesus Christ."

It's quite a thorny problem.

18. Govt to scrutinise slain Nazim's writings: Minister

Apr 2016
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said that the write-ups of the slain secular activist Nazimuddin Samad are needed to be scrutinised to see whether he wrote anything objectionable about religion.

He underscored the need for scrutiny in an interview with BBC Bangla Service while asked about possible cause behind the killing.
...
“I cannot say right now why it happened or what exactly happened. I need to gather information first,” the minister responded, when asked about the murder that took place Wednesday night.

“It is needed to see whether he has written anything objectionable in his blogs.”

Oxford English Dictionary: Islamic fundamentalism, esp. regarded as a religious or political ideology.

Islamism, also known as Political Islam (Arabic: إسلام سياسي? islām siyāsī , is an Islamic revival movement often characterized by moral conservatism, literalism, and the attempt "to implement Islamic values in all spheres of life."[1] Islamism favors the reordering of government and society in accordance with the Shari'a.[2] The different Islamist movements have been described as "oscillating between two poles": at one end is a strategy of Islamization of society through state power seized by revolution or invasion; at the other "reformist" pole Islamists work to Islamize society gradually "from the bottom up".[3] The movements have "arguably altered the Middle East more than any trend since the modern states gained independence", redefining "politics and even borders" according to one journalist (Robin Wright).[4]

To some Muslims - generally the Islamist kind that one sees on TV speechifying in Mosul, as well as their chip-on-the-shoulder followers in both west and east - "Islamist" is a pejorative word used by the evil Crusaders (that's us) to criticize their desire for theocracy and their rejection of western-style democracies.

Mohammed was not just a prophet who heard God's word - he was also the lawmaker and supreme leader of his followers. After him came the so-called Golden Age - during which Muslim armies conquered everyone they could reach while a caliph and religious leaders ran the show. Muslims are taught to look back on this as a great and glorious time when they were on top and all others fell before them. This is the glory that should be regained.

Because of this history, it is widely and generally accepted that Allah wants theocracy; Allah wants a caliphate; Allah wants sharia law. Allah doesn't want some secular democracy or some secular tyranny - that's evil kuffar stuff, that a few sell-out Muslims have shamefully embraced!

So to plenty of Muslims - all those who believe in theocracy, sharia, kalifa - 'Islamism' is a made-up western word. They would say: they are not islamists - they are Muslims. They are following the true islam that allah commanded and mohammed brought forth in glory.

It's part and parcel of the sense of victimization and inferiority/superiority stuff that is taught by those folks: "See how the westerners look down on us. See how they criticize our glorious religion. They call us "islamists." They say we should live like they do and have 'democracy.' They think our way is inferior. No - we are not Islamists - we are Muslims. We are the real Muslims, and the west hates us for being Muslims."

criticizing the government for doing nothing to stop the murderers.

That's a hopeful sign.

Left to themselves, I'm sure the government would happily turn a blind eye to the murders, or make deals with the Islamists the way the governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc, always do. As far as I can tell, those deals always amount to "We'll agree to let you Islamists have your way: you can force all girls and women back into medieval slavery, you can silence intellectuals with charges of blasphemy, you can have enormous power and be big men, and you can impose your brand of Islam on the captive population... if in return you'll agree not to challenge our nomimal secular rule. Oh, and please don't depose us and hack off our heads."

Al Qaeda-linked group claims Bangladesh killing: SITE

A group affiliated with al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the killing of a liberal Bangladeshi blogger this week, the SITE monitoring service said on Friday, citing a statement posted by the group online.

Ansar al-Islam, the Bangladesh division of al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), said its members had carried out the attack as "vengeance" because blogger Nazimuddin Samad had abused God, the Prophet Mohammad and Islam in Facebook posts.

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the authenticity of the message but SITE said the group had provided a link to its digital signature to verify it.

The 28-year-old was killed in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Wednesday by attackers wielding machetes, the latest in series of murders of secular activists by suspected Islamist militants.

Though they are probably reluctant to do too much for fear of being murdered themselves. Assassination is common in Bangladeshi politics. The current Prime Minister is the daughter of the country's first President. Both her parents and her three brothers were murdered in a vicious massacre; she escaped the same fate only because she happened to be studying abroad at the time.

No government in Bangladesh has been anything like perfect from a human rights perspective; but the religious extremism and violence represent the attitude of a minority, though a very dangerous one.
