San Francisco Chronicle Climate scientist Peter Gleick has resumed his duties as president of Oakland's Pacific Institute after three months of accusations, investigations and apologies for his decision to use trickery to obtain confidential papers from the libertarian Heartland Institute.
Gleick, a MacArthur Foundation fellow and co-founder of the institute, admitted that he had posed as a Heartland board member to get the documents, which he released to bloggers and Internet news sites.
The papers appear to show a coordinated national effort funded, at least in part, by oil interests to raise doubts about human-caused global warming -including the dissemination of school curriculum -but the Chicago-based group insists one of the memos that Gleick distributed is a phony.
