‘We were just burning': Ga. man poured boiling water over gay couple as they lay in bed, police say

Source: Washington Post

Marquez Tolbert buried his face in his hands. His chest contracted with a stifled sob.

When he looked up, a patchwork of angry red welts became visible on the side of his neck. That’s where he was burned. His T-shirt hid the full extent of his injuries, the swath of scalded skin that now covers his entire back.

“The pain,” he told WSBTV Thursday, his voice cracking on each syllable. “You can’t sleep at night.”

Tears were in the young man’s eyes. He winced, wiped his cheeks with the back of his hand, then took a sharp breath, summoning the words and the composure to go on.

Doesn't matter. Not important. Besides, that was a long time ago.

"this community does not care DU is busy cheering for anti gay clergy rather than speaking out against anti gay violence as usual, as always.

That was a blanket accusation of homophobia against the entire DU community . Let them cite the anti-gay posts they accuse"US" of supporting. I will be more than ready to condemn anyone who has done that and would advocate for their banning on DU. But hollow charges don't accomplish anything.

didn't like gay marriage until it was nearly a done deal (that's leadership for you ) and was part of the team that created "don't ask/don't tell" then didn't fight to get it fixed in the military.

Some people think that is a sucky record when it comes to LGBT and their civil rights. I've even been in a discussion where it was referred to as homophobia.

6. What are you talking about? And let's be clear about false equivalence.

While I disagree with "anti gay clergy" on most topics around gender and sex, let's be clear that there's a long distance between erroneously saying a certain behavior is "wrong" AND POURING FUCKING BOILING WATER ON THAT PERSON.

How many parents do you know, that when their kid does something absolutely wrong, like obviously lying or stealing, POUR BOILING WATER ON THEM?

So just because some "anti-gay clergy" is claiming "gay behavior" (first mistake) is "wrong" doesn't mean they are telling their flock to ASSAULT gay people. (Yes I think there are a small number of "clergy" that incite violent acts but I don't think that is who you mean.)

Why hijack the thread by making it about DUer's not being sufficiently excoriating towards someone (or group of someones) instead of highlighting how fucked up the behavior is in the news article that was actually posted?

Just curious - do you despise DU more than you despise the people who actually carry out heinous acts against gays?

26. All clergy are evil and no longer necessary...ALL of them.

Societies has moved on from "medicine men", "oracles", "rain dances" and human sacrifices. "Miracles" and "revelations" are unheard of in the last 1,000 years, which neatly coincides with the expansion of the scientific method and increase in understanding the natural world from the human mind.

It is past time to move on from religion as well...it inspires more division and hate than everything else in society combined. This religiously inspired, inhuman act is just one of thousands of examples available to any willing to see.

Humanity, if it has ANY chance at all to survive the coming catastrophic climate change (there was a story today that was showing 16 C warming in parts of the Arctic...SIXTEEN!!! - that number is a punch to the gut) has no choice but to abandon these primitive vestiges of our evolution.

Any system that inspires people to segregate and marginalize other people on fictitious bases is as doomed as its adherents in the next 50 years. Any system that inspires its adherents to torture unprotected and vulnerable people to "make a point" or just to be evil must go and must go now...."sincerely held" or not.

57. I'm an atheist, but religion will never disappear from human civilization.

Nor should it be a desirable goal.

Religion is one of the tools the human species uses to create the fictions we need to survive.

Justice, mercy, right and wrong, a place one calls 'home,' friendship and enmity, life and death (everything we experience takes place during the span of a single human lifespan, which, in terms of the vastness of time and space, can barely be claimed to exist at all.) All fictions that are irrelevant to the universe but essential to human existence.

Religion is not a 'primitive vestige of our evolution.' We do not, and I expect never will, possess the faculties to understand every aspect of the nature of the universe and all it contains. We still don't understand gravity, and we rely on fictions such as 'up and down' in order to function within its demands on a constant basis.

Religion is just one of the many means by which people establish some of these essential fictions. Sometimes they have destructive results - but the only alternative is indoctrination of everyone from birth into an uniform, rigid, and absolutely enforced belief structure that doesn't permit curiosity or the exercise of imagination. Who would design this belief structure? Who would administer the death penalty for those who stray even slightly (because nothing short of that would ensure compliance)? Do you really believe that to be a desirable alternative to a world of diverse human ideas, some of which may lead to religion?

Automated Message

AUTOMATED MESSAGE: Results of your alert

Mail Message

On Fri Mar 18, 2016, 10:04 AM you sent an alert on the following post:

All clergy are evil and no longer necessary...ALL of them.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=1382654

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

YOUR COMMENTS

> All clergy are evil and no longer
> necessary...ALL of them.

DU is not the place for such religious bigotry, especially in a thread about a Hate Crime as horrific as this one.

Please hide this unvarnished hate speech out of respect for the victims of this crime.

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Fri Mar 18, 2016, 10:33 AM, and voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT ALONE.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is this persons opinion. It is not an attack on any DU member.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: This point is true: http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2016/03/01/february_2016_s_shocking_global_warming_temperature_record.html

However, the word 'evil' merits the hide. Arguing the rest of the points is fine if those arguments are based on morally unadorned facts. Religion is a private matter that should be kept private. That being said, religion has no testable connection to reality and since I am not making the claims that religion is real, the burden of proof rests with the claimants - not with me. Scientifically gained knowledge on the other hand is testable and accurate to the extent that we can test it. If mankind wants to survive global climate change it will need to be done in the arena of the real.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It's an opinion piece and I'll vote to LEAVE IT as such if you know what I'm sayin.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The headline is over the top but the rest of the post is a strong opinion. I vote it can stay.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It is dishonest and immoral to make a living based on telling people to believe what is clearly a big pack of lies, and telling them they are bad people if they do not. That is the job if you are clergy, therefore it is exactly what all clergy do.

Thank you.

62. I'm very disappointed in this jury, especially the last juror.

There seems to be a massive misunderstanding about clergy.

My job was not to tell a big pack of lies and tell them they are bad people if they don't believe a certain way. And it is most certainly not what all clergy do.

Apparently this person has never met a UU minister, humanist chaplain, or liberal/humanist rabbis/cantors.

We're the non-anxious presence in times of stress, officiants at rituals to celebrate life's meaningful transitions, a helping hand when life gets to be too much to bear alone. Sometimes people don't feel the need for the full expensive services of a therapist, but want the objectivity, confidentiality, and guidance of someone trained to help. We guide communities of people who share common ethics and morals, typically ones that resonate deeply with progressives. Services are designed to remind people of the values daily living would often have us forget rather than spent in worship to a deity.

This whole sub-thread is appalling to me as it dismisses the hard work, usually very poorly paid, that men and women throughout our country do every day as members of the clergy.

make such sweeping generalizations about any group of people. Faith comes in many forms and should not be lumped together; particularly since it is the human condition that causes the grief noted, not necessarily one's religion. Thank you for the work you do.

68. You're right. That last juror makes a weird claim.

He claims it is dishonest and immoral to "tell people to believe a certain way and if they don't they're bad people" ( as if that's the job description of a clergy member)... And yet that seems to be his/her own argument: believe that religion is bs or you are automatically a bad person.

Not ALL clergy are evil. You may feel profoundly un-religious but quit trying to force everyone else to think like you. It's just as bad as people forcing their religion on people. I'll worship a pinata if I want to.

45. How the fuck did you think people GET to that point?

When you have some self-important mammals pretending their imaginary friend 1. exists 2. makes rules, and 3. has pronounced X behavior to be a 'sin', once they convince other people their imaginary friend exists, those other people DO things based on that claimed doctrine.

And then the clergy stands back and throws their hands up 'WE NEVER SAID TO THROW BOILING WATER ON THEM' but what the fuck do you expect to happen when you promulgate the idea that X population is 'bad' or 'sinful' or 'evil', and that 'god does not approve', etc? It makes them 'the other', makes them outsiders, less like 'people' and more like an abstract that doesn't belong. It makes simple-minded violent people select that population as a target. Some to vent hate. Some in an attempt to curry favor with said imaginary friend.

So just because some "anti-gay clergy" is claiming "gay behavior" (first mistake) is "wrong" doesn't mean they are telling their flock to ASSAULT gay people. (Yes I think there are a small number of "clergy" that incite violent acts but I don't think that is who you mean.)

That's EXACTLY how you get there. EXACTLY HOW. When the Pope thanks the catholic churches of Slovakia for 'Defending Marriage(TM)' as if it's under attack by those mean old gay monsters, that has consequences. Some are going to go further than just proposing discriminatory and bigoted legislation. Some are going to go DO things. Close their doors to gay customers. Fire them. Two years ago Slovakia gained anti-discrimination legislation for LGBTQ citizens. There's a correlation between the normalization of same-sex relationships, and the continuing decline of Catholicism in that country/europe. (World Population Data Sheet 2004)

“I greet the pilgrims from Slovakia and, through them, I wish to express my appreciation to the entire Slovak Church, encouraging everyone to continue their efforts in defense of the family, the vital cell of society,”
-Blank Frank the Wonderpope.

He's giving them liberty license to be bigots. That has consequences. Including violence. Small wonder you can't see it.

But it looks as if the perpetrator of this heinous crime was arrested and he's going to get his day in court.

The costs will be horrendous. Did they have medical insurance of some kind?

I don't know how this will work out, but these guys are victims and should not be held responsible for the medical costs. The "Go Fund Me" might help, but with burns like these it will take a whole lot of ongoing treatment.

What a disgusting, senseless and viscous attack. I hope the perp gets hard time and then has to spend the rest of his life doing community service.

These two victims will need lots of help to deal what has happened to them. Their scars will be emotional as well.

I'm part of this community, and I'd rather die a slow death by Ebola than cheer for an 'anti gay clergy.'

I don't believe I've ever seen such a thing on DU. And, if there has been, it's would be extreme aberration.

Also, although I'm extremely liberal, I still am uncertain about the question of the death penalty. I would gladly carry out such a sentence on the son of a bitch that did this. In a rather... private manner, preferably.

I wish cruel and unusual punishment laws didn't exist sometimes.

"They were stuck together like two hot dogs … so I poured a little hot water on them and help them out,” he said to police, according to the incident report. “… They’ll be alright. It was just a little hot water.”

What kind of animal does that to another human being.

10. The article includes GoFundMe links to help the two recover.

The lower-than-dirt scumbag has been arrested but unless Federal hate crime charges are filed and prosecuted successfully, the piece of shit will only face "aggravated assault" charges. I'm pretty sure that in most places, if that's a first offense, the piece of human filth will be out of prison before these guys' physical wounds will even healed enough for them to have some semblance of normal life.

I hope that sentencing in cases like this is allowed to take into account the damages inflicted on the victims, to make sure the perpetrator doesn't get out of his sentence before his victims even remotely get out of the sentence he opposed on them.

And I do hope this guy finds himself in general population with absence of sufficient protection.

32. Well, my guess is this perp has priors

Considering the particularly heinous nature of the crime, my guess is thus man has violent crimes in his past. In any case, he was charged with aggravated battery, the highest level of assault charges.

"Penalties for Aggravated Assault and Battery in Georgia

A person convicted of an aggravated assault or aggravated battery faces the following penalties:

between one year and twenty years in prison (minimum three years for aggravated assault by discharging a firearm from a vehicle)
probation up to twenty years
a fine up to $100,000, and
restitution.
If an offender is guilty of committing an aggravated assault or battery on public transit property or in a public transit vehicle, or against certain victims named in the statute (such as a family member or intimate partner, a person 65 years or older, a law enforcement officer, or a corrections officer), the court must impose a minimum sentence of three, five, or ten years in prison, depending on the victim."

"Georgia has had no hate crime statute since the state’s supreme court struck down the law in 2004. But WSBTV reported that Blackwell could face federal hate crime charges for the alleged attack."

19. I got burned like that, 2nd and 3rd degree over my face, neck, and right arm.

There is nothing that even comes close to the pain. It's much worse than broken bones or such. Mine happened in the middle of a Texas summer. It hurt bad when the AC would cut off and I would start to get hot, then it would hurt when it came back on just from the air circulating over my charred skin. The absolute worst is the deride eat. That's when you have to scrub your old, burnt skin off to avoid infection. I was inventing curse words until I almost passed out. Fortunately, the steam burn didn't require skin grafts for me. Now I discolor every summer where I was burned some 25 years later.

This homophobic asshole needs a taste of his own medicine.

30. Thanks for pointing out

who that person was referring to. As a gay man myself, I find Pope Francis a refreshing change from the bullshit artists before him. At least his focus is on charity to all and not condemnation.

My fear about the asshole who committed this vicious act of violence is that he will not suffer adequately for what he has done, therefore feeling emboldened to act this way again.

It's so tragic to have this type of horror through no fault of your own, especially at such a young age. And this shit happens throughout the world.

I NEEDED to know that cheney and * will suffer in the afterlife for their crimes ... because god knows they won't pay in this life.
I know it's a terrible reason to return to any kind of dogma, and in general my spirituality is between me and god and NO ONE ELSE... but I need, NEED to know that bad people will pay even if its not in this life.
I'm not expecting any kind of reward for the works I do.
I do it because it needs to be done and no one else is offering.

Could it be republicans? Could it be that profit is all that matters in a country devoid of empathy? Could it be the size of our military.

Whatever it is, there sure seems to be a lot of it.

Why is there less of this in the countries that are socialist? Could this be the result of the way capitalism pits citizens against each other?

73. Not just America. It occurred to me earlier, this reminds me of acid attacks in some cultures.

You probably know the ones of which I speak.

A woman - sometimes a man, but almost always a woman - does something, or has something done to her, that somehow "dishonors" the family, or some guy who thought he had a right to her as property. Then she is punished with acid thrown in her face.

Seems to me what happened to these young men is on a par with that kind of attack.

I think this kind of garbage exists in many cultures. It would be interesting to read a study about what the relative prevalence of these types of attacks in various countries, compared to other facts about each society.

66. I know, it's terrible

But it can also be about what charges the DA can make stick. They generally will go with a lesser charge that's a sure thing than risk an acquittal or mistrial. While the minimum possible sentence is only a year for aggravated battery, the maximum is 20 years. Attempted murder probably has a similar maximum but would be harder to prove because the DA would have to prove the intent to kill. But, heaven forbid, everything changes if one of the victims dies. Infection is a big problem with burns.

The person who did it tried to minimize it as "something they'll get over" makes me even angrier. He needs to be facing charges way worse than aggravated assault and attempted murder seems fair here. That degree of burn over that much of someones body could easily be fatal. The pain and suffering must be immense, I will be donating to their gofundme today.
