Assad: "Monsters" to blame for Syria massacre

CBS/AP) BEIRUT - Syrian President Bashar Assad denied Sunday that his government had anything to do with last week's gruesome Houla massacre, saying not even "monsters" would carry out such an ugly crime.

In a televised speech to parliament, Assad blamed foreign-backed terrorists and extremists for the bloodshed. "We are facing a real war from outside," he said.

"Despite the political and reform process which we launched, terror has not stopped. I don't have a magic wand. I have tried all political solutions with no avail. Terror will not stop unless we force it to stop," he said in his televised speech.

He pledged to press ahead with his military crackdown.

"The enemy has entered to the inside. We hate blood, but we have to deal with the situation on the ground as it needs to be dealt with," the Syrian leader warned.

1. If he wants to find the monster, all he needs to do is look in the mirror.

3. The region is a hall of mirrors.

Anywhere you want to look, there are monsters reflecting off the image of other monsters. The U.S. should avoid putting itself further into this hall of mirrors.

8. Read my mind

Who does he think he's fooling? This faux outrage is almost as outrageous as the wholesale and targeted slaughter of innocent civilians.

6. Well, it's not as if there's no precedent...

Don't mistake me; Assad and his Baath regime are not "nice guys."

However, one interesting feature of Assad's reign in Syria has been a lack of desire to "play ball" with the west. You can flash dollars at the Saudi regime and they'll do whatever you want. You could promise Mubarak you will not prosecute his crimes against Egyptians, and he'd give you what you want. Even good ol' friend of liberty Saddam would buckle under if you promised him guns from the set of his favorite western. Repeat as needed for other governments in the middle east... Except Iran and Syria. These two nations have been consistent in telling the West and its little outpost to piss off when officials come by and ask these nations to fuck themselves over in exchange for some petty cash.

What do western nations do with countries that don't bend? Historically we make efforts to break them, don't we? So when Assad says "we are facing a real war from outside," his statement may not be false...

All he needs to do is give some evidence for the claim. It can't be hard to find if that's true, Bashar; western coup attempts are pretty fucking sloppy and the merchandise is usually covered in "made in USA" tags. So... Let's see it, and it might be believable.

9. My husband thinks we'll go in there

But I disagreed with him, however the UN needs to do more than pass resolutions and condemn this barbarity. A little offence would do right now. He's got carte blanche to kill so until the rest of the world does something proactive the people will continue to die at the hands of the monsters he has set loose on the populace and now has the audacity to call out publicly.

14. Why would we send anyone there?

Whether or not we're involved, this is 100% in the regional interests of the US. Stopping the killing? Not so much. If Assad is overthrown, well, we can get a nice comfy puppet installed, maybe something along the lines of King Abdullah. if he's not overthrown, then that's good for propaganda purposes and drumming for war with Iran.

Welcome to the disgustingly cynical worldview of US foreign relations.

10. There are many, independently-acting armed groups in Syria.

Some are state forces, some are anti-state, and some are quasi-state. Now there are purely sectarian militias that are purely acting on the impulse of revenge.
