Iowa caucuses: Ted Cruz wins; Clinton, Sanders tied
Source: CNN Politics
(CNN)One thing is clear after Monday night's Iowa caucuses: there's a long, volatile election season ahead before two deeply fractured parties can unite behind a nominee.
Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are leaving the Hawkeye State in a virtual tie -- a vote that underscores the Democratic party's debate over whether it should solidify behind President Barack Obama's legacy or move forward with more radical health care and economic reforms.
Republican Ted Cruz bested Donald Trump, raising questions about the billionaire's reliance on his celebrity instead of traditional political organization. And Marco Rubio's stronger-than-expected showing could mark him as the establishment's best hope against a grassroots revolt in next week's New Hampshire primary and beyond.

(9,992 posts)a GOP-leaning site. Even Republicans hate Cruz.
Luckily, we can remember Presidents Huckabee and Santorum to see what a win in Iowa means for GOP candidates.

(86,048 posts)I heard a snippet of the speech on NPR this morning and when he came to the part where he espouses the greatness of how "good xtian values" made this country great... even half asleep my mind was screaming, "No you flaming zealot, it was those xtians who made this country not great and created a country that was founded on the spoils of genocide and absolute pillage of the landscape, flora and fauna!!"
Geeze I loathe these assholes. That reminds me, I need to fix my sigline.

(51,367 posts)With 99% reporting, the all-important delegate count per CNN is Clinton 24 to Sanders 21.

(35,692 posts)Even so, it is great he did not win. And I do not see the Cruz victory as being such a big deal. He threw everything into Iowa and still came away with only 28% and 8 delegates - Trump and Rubio each got 7 delegates. We will see what happens in New Hampshire. I see Cruz's appeal to be fairly limited to Evangelicals and Rubio is now cutting into that. I believe Rubio pulled Evangelicals away from both Cruz and Trump. I think the strong showing by Rubio will cut into Trump and Cruz support in New Hampshire.

(35,692 posts)Clinton beats Sanders 53% to 44% among women while Sanders beats Clinton among men 50% to 42%. This could be a harbinger of things to come as women made up 57% of the Democratic voters in Iowa while men were 43%. If these trends continue it could bode well for Clinton over the long haul.
