Occupy Cal Protesters Sue for $15 Million

Protesters say they were beaten and suffered emotional stress.

Occupy Cal protesters who filed a federal lawsuit last November against UC Berkeley amended that suit to demand $15 million following a protest last year.

Wednesday protesters announced that they would amend their lawsuit to demand $7.5 million in compensatory damages for physical and emotional harm and denial of Constitutional rights, and $7.5 million in punitive damages.

The amended suit will also demand the school redress the protesters for "false arrests and UCB’s political witch hunt" against them.

"We want this to set the precedent for every university administration, that they will not attack our right to protest for public education. Through the course of this lawsuit, we will use every means at our disposal, including legal and direct action, to expose UC-Berkeley’s policy of political suppression and win justice," said Yvette Felarca, a lead plaintiff and a BAMN national organizer.

1. Time will tell

I wonder how long it'll take for it to go to court and how long the university will drag it out to save money?

10. The college students I used to work with at various restaurants and bars....

were destined to be the bosses of the assholes who treated them so poorly.

Sometimes it comes back fast.

5. I'd have less issue with this if it would only affect the Regents.

But we all know that the end result is less low level staffing and higher tuition rates for students. Hard to support that.

7. How do "we all know" where the money comes from?

Don't include me in your meme. There are already legal defense funds no doubt. I mean fund like in fund accounting.

9. If you think that the rich scum bags who run UCB will feel any pain

You are seriously deluded. They NEVER feel any pain, they always pay themselves first at the expense of everyone else. That is the way every institution runs, those at the top insulate themselves first and get paid first, even if it means destroying the rest of the place in the process.

8. i agree.

A payout like that would have erysipelas visible negative consequences ... I am sure the students will be gratefully for the higher fees and loss of programs

6. Is that all? They should sue for the total wealth of all those donating overtime, equipment pay, etc

Or, certainly, every bit of what was donated plus what they spent of their own.

11. Nobody protests like they do out in Cali.

Nobody sues like they do, either.
