Planned Parenthood Sting Caught On Video, Released By Anti-Abortion Activists
Source: Huffington Post
A group of anti-abortion activists that Planned Parenthood has suspected is targeting it in a hoax investigation released the first of a series of videos on Tuesday that purportedly shows Planned Parenthood encouraging the selective abortions of girls in the United States.
The activist group, Live Action, sent pregnant actors posing as patients to Planned Parenthood clinics across the country and had them ask a certain pattern of questions about sex-selective abortions. The result of the undercover operation is a series of videos called "Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America," which Live Action says will expose the problem of gendercide in the United States and show how Planned Parenthood facilitates it.
The first video released on Tuesday shows a Planned Parenthood staffer at a clinic in Austin, Texas, answering an actor-patients questions about a sex-selective abortion. Suggesting that she wants to have an abortion if the fetus turns out to be a girl, the visitor asks the staffer how soon she can detect the gender with an ultrasound.

(4,619 posts)Isn't it about time that we had our own cadre' of undercover videographers to record the undoubtedly terroristic activities of the anti-choice nutballs? Fight fire with fire, I say.

(2,978 posts)It may not be illegal, nor should it be, but hell yes I'm going to say it's immoral.
First, when it shows a pattern of devaluing female life, then it's a frightening form of sexism being etched into future populations.
Second, and more broadly, pregnancy is not farming. We don't try to grow the right crop and till the field because our fetus doesn't have blue eyes, or a gene for intelligence, or a penis.
This board would be up in arms if a group were advocating selective abortion of fetuses simply on the basis of their having hermaphroditic genitalia.
Aborting otherwise healthy babies because they don't fit a particular physical ideal is a very slippery slope.
Just because the anti-abortionists hate a practice (if it exists--and I seriously doubt Planned Parenthood would ever engage in such a practice)--doesn't mean it's inherently moral or at most a neutral choice. A stopped watch is wrong twice a day.
I don't care if I get slammed for this. Abortions of perfectly healthy fetuses to have the right "sex" or supposed IQ or physical ideal of a baby is practicing eugenics. It's f-ing wrong.

(13,200 posts)This is another rightwing scam video. They can't come up with any real evidence (and don't care anyway because they already know their minds) so they have to send in some conwoman to create the scenario. Please don't get all righteous because it's not real.

(10,302 posts)As a Lutheran/Anglican Christian - my faith tells me that a child is a child - life is sourced from God and God made that child in his image. Now that's my point of view and no-one else has to agree with it.
You are right Zazen. Selective abortion on the basis of gender in my view *is* eugenics in another form and it is totally repugnant and wrong in my eyes. Legality is another issue and I'm not going into that can of worms.
Want evidence for this? Look no further than the Peoples' Republic of China. In 2001, the birth ratio was 112 males to 100 females. Despite the Chinese government making legal changes to try and correct this imbalance whilst still keeping the one child per family policy, the general population have a tendency to favour males over females, as far as their offspring is concerned.

(19,458 posts)The ridiculous and staged inquiries were about a completely legal matter. And while some may find it distasteful or against their own morals, Planned Parenthood is a MEDICAL organization, and are not obligated to give moral counseling. So I don't really understand the outrage.

(23,141 posts)Straw-man all the way. Pro-choice means choosing not to be pregnant. Not choosing whether or not to have a girl. That's an entirely different choice, which in my estimation very rarely occurs in this country. We have more women than men in this country.
These people are as sick as they come.

(649 posts)"Statistics do not indicate that the US has a problem with sex-selective abortions, nor do they indicate an increasing gender discrepancy in the American birth rate. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the sex ratio the number of baby boys born per 1,000 baby girls has actually been decreasing slightly but steadily over the last 30 years. In 1983, 1,052 boys were born for every 1,000 girls born in the US; in 2009, 1,048 boys were born for every 1,000 girls. This is only indicative of a growing problem if by growing problem, Rose means growing anti-abortion rights talking point."
Sad that the religious right-wing is so far up their own asses,. that they just make up 'facts' .

(10,302 posts)... are looking at the wrong country.
If the USA has 104 males to 100 females, why does China have 112 males to 100 females? Why is the male:female ratio getting distorted in India, and India is known to have problems with female foeticide. India is at the point that there are 9 girls for every 10 boys.
It's not just the big countries either. Now San Marino and Jersey (not NJ, USA) can be explained because of their tiny populations - but Albania, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Georgia (not GA, USA) have ratios of children of many more males to females.
