"COLUMBIA - A fire ravaged a planned student apartment complex in Columbia early Sunday morning.

Crews received a call about a "fully involved" fire on the second and third floors of the still-under-construction Brookside on College Apartments on the corner of College Avenue and Walnut Street at 5:09 a.m., according to the Columbia Fire Department.

When they arrived on scene two minutes later, firefighters reported that the building was "fully involved" and began a "defensive attack" to preserve as much of the north side of the building as possible, Captain John Metz said.

All available Columbia Fire Department units were dispatched to the scene, and Boone County Fire personnel were called to staff posts at the station."

1. Holy crap...

I go by that construction area every week when I go to my local comic store. Can't say that I really liked the idea of student apartments at that place, but it sucks that it burned down. If it turns out to arson, I hope that they catch the guy(s) that did it.

If not arson, maybe cheap building materials or construction shortcuts to get it ready by August?

7. That certainly is

something to be thankful for.

Also, it's a bit selfish, but I'm glad that it didn't get hugely catastrophic and didn't spread to the comic store a few blocks away.

2. Are local structure fires of national interest now?

The fire danger is high, here.

With the hot temperatures and dry conditions that have consumed the region through the spring, officials are warning residents to be extra careful over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. With the fire danger high and windy conditions possible, people are urged to be careful with campfires and other types of controlled burns.

4. heard nearby ... "Planned APARTMENT? Let me see that message ...

DAMMIT, it was supposed to be PLANNED PARENTHOOD! Sh*t, now we're in real trouble!"

(and, for the impaired, this was not really heard ... it's supposed to be a joke ...)
