Report: Fla. officer shoots, kills naked attacker
Source: CBS-AP
(AP) MIAMI - A Miami police officer on Saturday fatally shot a naked man who was chewing on the face of another man on a downtown causeway off-ramp, police and witnesses said. The Miami Herald reports that gunshots were heard at about 2 p.m. on the MacArthur Causeway off-ramp, which is near the newspaper's offices. Witnesses said that a woman saw two men fighting and flagged down a police officer, who came upon a naked man mauling the other man. The newspaper quoted witnesses as saying that the officer ordered the naked man to back away, and when he ignored the demand, the officer shot him. Witnesses said that the naked man continued his attack after being shot once, and the officer shot him several more times. Police said the other man was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center. The newspaper said he had suffered critical injuries. The police department confirmed in a news release that there was an officer-related shooting, but did not include many details provided by witnesses to the newspaper. 3. A question: if two individuals do NOT have a weapon,
|
and a police officer comes upon fighting with his gun drawn, does he/she ever fire into the air as a "warning shot" before actually shooting someone? Just curious. It would seem to me that the sound of a gun in close proximity might make some folks sit up and take notice, i.e. cease and desist from their encounter and law enforcement can take charge. Just sayin'.

They were touching, and if he were getting his face chewed, that means even more fluids to convey the shock. That could have killed the victim while merely delaying the attacker.

23. Agreed. The Chew-ee was being mauled by the Chew-er to the point of getting 'critical injuries.'
|
I can hardly imagine what it would like to be on the receiving end of such an attack.
And I might have wanted the officer to shoot the Chew-er to save what was left of my face. What a horrible job to have to go out on calls and witness this. A friend called me today and I mentioned I was selling my camping gear, and said I'd better, because 'people are going crazy out there!' She must have heard about this. n/t |

Come down at some point. Warning shots are very bad ideas, and in most jurisdictions it is considered as "use of deadly force", the same as shooting someone directly.

The bullet will follow a parabolic trajectory and return to the ground approaching its original velocity. And could kill someone.

Shots fired up in the air come down at the same rate and land unpredictably. It's not uncommon for somebody to die as a result on New Year, in places where morons fire guns in the air for fun.
Most anybody with gun training knows not to shoot at somebody unless you intend to make them 100% less alive. |

40. A shot fired into the air, especially in a crowded city,
|
may well have fatal consequences for an innocent person. The bullet will come down somewhere. I would prefer a bullet's trajectory be directed rather than aimless. It seems to me this was an appropriate use of deadly force. The bad guy was clearly out to do grievous harm to another individual, and he got shot dead for his efforts. Guns don't kill people; cannibals do.

Or Tasering him. My guess is a full out psychotic break, perhaps drug induced, that gave him such a surge of adrenaline that gives someone super strength.
And, frankly, if someone was *chewing off my face* I would thank the cop who put a quick end to it. |

Youngsters here are not likely to recall muggy days indoors with an indifferent gym teacher rolling not-dramatized-at-all scare films about the dangers of PCP.
The precursor chemicals which were used to easily make it were run out of the market in the '70s, and '80s, and the remaining chemicals (many 55-gallon drums of which were reputedly stolen) should have long since degraded. So unless this dude found some in the bottom of a meat freezer or something, I am at a loss to guess how the guy got hold of some. But the described behavior sure sounds like someone on "angel dust," as they used to call it. Heh. "The Angle of Death." Obviously an obtuse angle. |

Everyone laughed, now who's laughing. This is the beginning of the zombie attacks, beware of face chewing and a despondent, uncaringly dead look in the eyes. May be confused with a republican's natural demeanor, so wait for chewing before reacting!
Is the sarcasm quote necessary here? I do not support violence in any way, zombies have rights and the unarmed, naked, face chewing zombie had rights. |

Somebody who has symptoms of rabies, doesn't know what it is, and doesn't want to deal with our country's medical system is bound to try to self-medicate, especially if he's doing street drugs anyway. Plus given his grave condition and deteriorating mental state, his self-medication is bound to be rather extreme. The more I think about it, the more I'm surprised it hasn't happened before given the fact that there has been a rabies epidemic running unabated through the nation's wildlife for the last fifty years, and our health care system has been deteriorating over that time. Plus, we have a higher number of homeless who would be exposed to a variety of infected fauna. But since you mention it, and since I couldn't possibly know one random guy who had an infected kid would be reading it, you're right, it is funny. I'm glad you found Dr. House, then. |

Someone with rabies biting thirty people was similar to the joke the doctor told us.
When my kid had to get a round of shots after getting bitten by a rabid skunk. We had to collect said dead skunk, take it the vet to have his head removed and sent to the state lab and there it was. Then had to drive over a hundred miles away to get the vaccine, from the state as they controlled it in order to keep track of the wildlife and human infections. I learned a lot about rabies. They gave me a lot of paperwork to show how serious it was. It was something growing up in the city with animal control and rabies shots mandated for pets that I didn't think about much when I lived in town. There was and is an epidemic in the county I lived in and the primary vectors were coyotes, although bats had infected some people. Some animal herds came down with it. The reports said that coyotes had also spread bubonic plague with their fleas infesting pets. The people who died didn't realize they'd contacted the disease and went too long before seeing a doctor. One was a cowhand about 20 years old who had had a glancing bite by a bat and didn't think anything about it until he got sick enough to be hospitalized. The doctors discovered he was coming down with rabies and there was nothing they could do but make him comfortable. Reading that story hit me hard, so young and he didn't have a clue what was happening to him as you suggest may have happened in this case. And it could have been prevented if he'd gotten the shots. My kid got bitten thinking the skunk needed help as it had come around during the day, which they don't do as they're nocturnal. Unfortunately, some months later my kid saw another animal in distress and got bit again. More shots. Bet you haven't heard of someone getting the shots twice. My kid was always getting into something. Our vet who handled livestock, also had to get rabies booster shots, just like dogs and cats, but it goes according to weight. |

Wow! Harrowing. The survival rate on rabies, if you don't get the shots on time is for practical purposes, zero. A procedure called the Milwaukee Protocol is successful eight percent of the time and takes two months in the hospital. |

Face-eating man incident intensifies scrutiny over 'bath salts' drug
While it's not yet certain that Rudy Eugene had ingested bath salts, the synthetic drug has come under its most intense fire yet Rudy Eugene, 31, the naked man who was fatally shot by Miami police on Saturday as he took bites out of another man's face, may have been high on a street drug known as "bath salts", police have suggested. While it is not yet certain what was in Eugene's system at the time of the bizarre attack – the first reports suggested he may have been on an LSD-like hallucinogen – bath salts are coming under increasingly intense scrutiny at federal and local levels. Bath salts are synthetic, 'designer' drugs, sold as if they were legal products. Packaged as phony goods – not just bath salts, but also incense, plant food and glass cleaner – these drugs are cooked up and sold with the express purpose of providing a cheap high. 85. Rudy Eugene Identified As Miami Zombie, Plus (WARNING!) NSFW Photo of Attack's Aftermath
|
<snip>
"More than likely, Rudy Eugene was on a bad acid trip, according to Miami police union chief Armando Aguilar. Eugene's the naked man who was gnawing the face of a half-naked homeless man on the MacArthur Causeway near the Miami Herald headquarters Saturday afternoon. A Miami police officer shot and killed Eugene when he did not obey commands to stop feasting on his victim. The grisly incident generated international headlines and a world of snickering about a burgeoning zombie Apocalypse in Miami. Aguilar, president for the Fraternal Order of Police, tells Banana Republican that Eugene exhibited signs he was high on LSD, as well as symptoms for "excited delirium," a controversial syndrome that supposedly turns drug users (primarily cocaine enthusiasts) into raging and almost unstoppable incredible Hulks. "I'm going by similarities in other cases of excited delirium I've researched in the last couple of days," Aguilar says. Two years ago, Miami New Times staff writer Gus Garcia-Roberts explored how Miami-Dade County led the nation in deaths attributed to excited delirium, which has been dismissed as junk science by the American Civil Liberties Union and families of the deceased who were diagnosed with the syndrome. It is not listed in textbooks or recognized by the American Medical Association or the American Psychiatric Association. First diagnosed in Miami in the 1980s, excited delirium's symptoms include high body temperature, agitation, paranoia, aggression, great strength, numbness to pain, and, in some cases, sudden death. Aguilar has been telling local media outlets that Eugene may have overdosed on LSD, citing four previous instances in Miami-Dade when people ingested too much acid, removed their clothes, and became violent." http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2012/05/rudy_eugene_the_miami_zombie_w.php |
