100 flee when deputies break up Putnam County dogfight where 19 dogs were seized

Source: jacksonville.com

By Dana Treen

As many as 100 people were seen fleeing an illegal dog fight in western Putnam County late Saturday when deputies responded to a call of barking and hollering coming from the woods.

Two wounded dogs found in a wood-box arena designed for fighting were among 19 dogs found in the area. One of the seized dogs was later stolen in a break-in at the county’s animal control facility where deputies said a fence at the rear of the kennels was cut.

The seizure of the dogs and discovery that a fight had been organized off Azalea Lane in western Putnam began with the reports of noise in the woods around midnight Saturday.

Deputies said about 100 people were in a lighted area and fled when they arrived, leaving behind 39 vehicles, some registered as far away as Jonesboro, Ga., and Bradenton, when they fled.

If their vehicle was found during a raid of a dog fight, then they would and should have some explaining to do.

A lie like that gives the police the ability to charge you with two crimes. First, impeding a police investigation (lying). Second, participation in a dog fight.

The correct answer to the police officer would be, "I decline to answer any of your questions." If they actually arrest you, the answer becomes "I decline to speak to you without my attorney present." There is no need to feed them stories...just tell them that you won't talk to them.

Lying simply creates a second charge that they can hit you with, or an alternate charge if they can't hit you with the primary offense. If, for example, the police were unable to prove that you attended the dogfight but WERE able to prove that you did not lend out your car, you could be charged with obstruction while evading the dogfighting charges. The lie and misdirection can become the very thing that gets you locked up.

99% of the time, if you actually committed a crime, your best course of action is to simply keep your mouth shut.

Pity that it does not work in certain parts of the country, where the police think that they can do no wrong, and that shooting first and asking questions later, often much, much later is the norm.

That said, I was, am and will be a canine lover forever. I've had three extra-large rescue dogs at one time, and am down to one cutie. The idea of people getting off on dog fighting just plain sickens me.
I hope they tow each car, and charge everyone who comes to pick them up with several crimes.

One of my fur babies is a former bait dog and she is the most intelligent, loving and forgiving dog I’ve had the pleasure to own. The thing that gives me a lump in my throat is how much she truly loves people-the same creatures that tied her up and tried to have other dogs kill her.

I wish we’d stop put as much money into eradicating dog-fighting as we did into the war on drugs; and the bonus here is you’d actually get some drug dealers in your net.

Happens with race horses too. Run to death for wager 'fun'. This animal abuse is a Felony charge today.

The police should go after these crimes with as much focus as they try to get a black driver to turn on a turn single to late.

11. Interesting historical note - most Putnam Counties are named for Israel Putnam

Israel Putnam (January 7, 1718 – May 29, 1790) was an American army general officer and Freemason, popularly known as "Old Put", who fought with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775) during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). His reckless courage and fighting spirit became known far beyond Connecticut's borders through the circulation of folk legends in the American colonies and states celebrating his exploits.

He had previously served notably as an officer with Rogers' Rangers during the French and Indian War, when he was captured by Mohawk warriors. He was saved from the ritual burning given to enemies by intervention of a French officer, with whom the Mohawk were allied.

But Putnam County, Florida - where the dogfight was broken up - was named for his gradnson:
The county was named for Benjamin A. Putnam, who was a soldier in the First Seminole War, a lawyer, Florida legislator, and the first president of the Florida Historical Society. The Putnam County Historical Society has determined that Benjamin A. Putnam is the grandson of Israel Putnam, for whom other counties and places in the United States are named.[4] Benjamin A. Putnam died in the county seat of Palatka in 1869.

I was born and raised there and still have family there. It is one of those places where the middle-class and all the jobs that kept it in existence have vanished.

This 'event' seems to have been in Hawthorne, FL which is just a stone's throw from Gainesville, FL... which is in Alachua County one of the most Liberal counties in the state.
