Priest in Pa. child sex-abuse case: 'You don’t say no to Cardinal Bevilacqua'

Source: Washington Post/AP

A priest assigned to help handle child sex-abuse complaints at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia told jurors Tuesday that Monsignor William Lynn was the only other person who could have created a typed list of suspected pedophile priests.

Monsignor James Beisel's testimony came as the defense began its case in Lynn's child-endangerment and conspiracy trial. Rev. James Brennan also is on trial, charged with molesting a teenager.

Prosecutors have introduced the list as evidence that Lynn and other church officials were aware the archdiocese had known predators in jobs around children for years or decades. But defense lawyers argue Lynn took orders from Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. And witnesses Tuesday agreed that only the cardinal could transfer a priest or remove him from ministry.

Said Beisel: "... you don’t say no to Cardinal Bevilacqua."

3. Omertá, omertá

An excerpt from an old 'Ndrangheta (Calabrian Mafia) tune - first in the original Calabrian dialect of Italian, then in English:

L' omertá é cumandamentu
Esti leggi saggia e giusta
Cu prestau lu giuramentu
Lu sgarrari assai ci custa

Occhiu tengu ma nun viu
Sugnu surdu e puru mutu
Sacciu i reguli di Diu
Ma restu sempri nu tambutu

Omertá, omertá
Chista é leggi societá
Leggi chi non perduna
A cu faci infamitá

Secrecy is a commandment
It's a law that's just and wise
Whosoever breaks his oath
He must pay - he knows the price

I have eyes, but I see nothing
I am deaf and mute as well
For I know the laws of God
And always keep them to myself

Omertá, omertá
It's the law of our society
A law that does not forgive
Those who break their secrecy

4. Such BIG

Glass houses. Now lets keep throwing the rocks, and rid ourselves of these freaks once and for all. Expose them and send them to jail. There are many "souls" they can save there. I bet even their own "souls" can be save by others looking for a soul mate.

5. "... you don’t say no to Cardinal Bevilacqua."

If you can't bring yourself to speak truth to Power, then you don't deserve the power you have.

8. "Whitewashed tombs" is more like it

Spendid and outwardly pious, but rotten to the core, in the same vein as the Pharisees in Jesus' time.

9. Agreed. They can't say no to the criminal cardinal but can say no to god's will

That whole "do unto others as ye would have done onto yourselves...." bit (amongst other instructions for a pious life).
