Campaign Watchdogs: Pro-Rubio TV Ads Are Breaking The Law
Source: NBC News
Conservative Solutions Project, an outside group promoting Republican Marco Rubio's presidential campaign, has spent nearly $8.5 million in TV ads -- making it the second-biggest advertiser in the 2016 Republican race so far. But the group's apparent support for a single presidential candidate has raised questions about the advertisements' legality.
The ads, which have aired in the early nominating states of Iowa and New Hampshire, have featured Rubio denouncing the Iran deal and delivering one of his early political speeches in 2015 -- months before Rubio's own campaign started running its first TV ad this week.
And unlike a Super PAC, Conservative Solutions Project doesn't have to disclose its donors because it exists as a tax-exempt social welfare group under section 501(c)(4) of the tax code.
But it's precisely that tax-code designation that has campaign-finance watchdogs alleging the Conservative Solution Project ads are illegal -- because they are benefitting an individual presidential candidate rather than advancing the social welfare.

(160,515 posts)You can be sure it would be common knowledge, maybe even wildly embellished if Narco Rubio were a Democrat. In fact, they probably could have ruined his career with this, had he been a Democrat.
The Miami Cocaine Cowboys were a vicious bunch, no two ways about it. Lots of people murdered all over the place, tons of C-4 attacks, god only knows how much evil they managed to set loose in the world. They especially didn't want any witnesses against them hanging around. Lotsa murdered witnesses. Even murdered prosecutors.
Thanks for the enlightenment. Truly interesting.

(5,902 posts)There's an old joke:
Two guys are walking through the financial district in some major city; it's cold and windy.
The first guy, somewhat disheveled, tells his friend: "life is so hard in the city, this concrete jungle."
And his dapper friend replies: "Not at all. It's a question of getting in good with the lions."
That's what waterboy did - him and so many others: they found out what was making the most money in his particular city (and we all know what that really is), and made himself useful.
It was either that, or a lifetime as a waiter in Little Havana having to put up with a constant ¡Oye, chico!
Can't say I blame him.
