Cox Communications has agreed to pay a $595,000 civil penalty to settle a federal investigation over a 2014 data breach in which a hacker, pretending to be a Cox employee, gained electronic access to customers personal information, including names, email addresses and partial Social Security and drivers license numbers.
The breach, which occurred in August 2014, was not reported to the Federal Communications Commission as required by law, officials with the FCCs enforcement bureau said.
Cox said it notified the FBI after discovering the breach.
We have a really strong working relationship with the FBI and instinctively notified them through our normal channels, said Stephen Boggs, a Cox spokesman based in Atlanta, where the company is headquartered.
