Employee at Clinton's email hosting company feared a cover-up

Source: Politico

“Any chance you found an old email with their directive to cut the backup back in Oct-Feb,” one Platte River employee asked another, according to excerpts of the emails included in a Monday letter from Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.). “I know they had you cut it once in Oct-Nov, then again to 30day in Feb-ish.”

Such a record, the employee said, would be “golden," and would clear the company of outside criticism and point back to Clinton Executive Service Corp., which “appears to be a Clinton family company,” according to the Johnson letter.
“Starting to think this whole thing really is covering up some shaddy shit,” the employee continued. “I just think if we have it in writing that they told us to cut the backups, and we can go public saying we have had backups since day one, then we were told to trim to 30 days, it would make us look a WHOLE LOT better.”

McClatchy first reported on the Johnson letter.

Unfortunately, Clinton did not start by "putting all her cards on the table", so information slowly leaked out instead of one massive dump-and-done. Turn the entire server over to State at the end of her term and she could have completely washed her hands of it long before anyone gave a damn. But she didn't.

Then Blumenthal's email got hacked, and RW Tools found out she hadn't turned over all her work email, as required by FOIA. So they got to go on a FOIA fishing expedition. In response, Team Clinton kept up the drip-drip-drip of events instead of, again, just dumping the whole fucking server on State. Heck, she even interrupted the shitstorm over the letter the Republicans wrote to Iran in order to remind everyone about her server.

The story in the OP is yet another drip that was created by 1) Doing something really dumb to begin with, completely botching the server's security in the process, and 2) utterly inept handling of the resulting events.

And no, I do not buy the bullshit that people are trying to attach to the email story, either to inflate it or to dismiss it. For example, it has nothing to do with Benghazi despite the efforts of Clinton supporters to conflate the two.

What we know happened:
1) Clinton set up her own email server. The explanations for this are weak and have changed repeatedly, indicating we don't have the actual reason. For example, "I didn't want to carry two phones" doesn't fly when she also claims to be a technophile that travels with a phone, a tablet and a kindle.

2) Clinton did not turn over the work emails from her server when she stepped down from State.

3) Blumethal's email was hacked by a Romanian group, who dumped his email to the public. Revealing that Clinton did state business from her account.

4) 2 and 3 allowed RW nutjobs to go on a FOIA fishing expedition.

5) Clinton repeatedly botched the aftermath of 1-4. She could have just turned over everything when she stepped down, avoiding #2. She could have turned over everything after #4. Instead, she ended up ensuring maximum coverage of her email server by trickling out information. For example, handing over paper copies of the emails lead to "BIG_NUMBER of pages" stories. As another example, she interrupted the shitstorm over the letter the Republicans wrote to Iran to hold her first press conference about it. Thus reducing the damage to the Republicans and vastly increasing the damage to herself.

6) During all this, people reviewed the security of her server - it was still on the Internet, after all. And found that the security was utterly and completely abysmal. They left the default VPN keys installed. They used self-signed SSL certs. They didn't even encrypt communication with the server for the first three months. There's a typosquatter. And so on.

7) Then emails were found where Clinton and/or her aides were discussing TS/SCI. Causing another big flash of coverage.

8) Her IT guy had to plead the 5th because of 6 and 7. Negligent handling of classified information is a federal crime. This gets people all excited because he's obviously covering something (his own negligence, probably). But that fuels even more interest and speculation and thus coverage.

9) Clinton decided to testify about the server to Congress many months after the story started, right as the primary campaign really starts getting traction, and close to the first of our pitiful number of debates. Thus ensuring coverage of the story keeps going for months with a massive spike right when she needs to really start "selling" her candidacy. If Clinton is supposed to be such a "fighter" and master at handling Congress, why the fuck didn't she testify in August when the political press was on vacation?

10) 1 through 9 ensures that there will be drips of information over at least the next year, leading to stories reminding everyone about the server. And it does not matter if that information turns out to be false, because even false stories remind everyone about the situation.

What Team Clinton did will be taught for decades in political science classes of how to not handle a "scandal". Someone who's been under a microscope for the last 24 years should know when to do a dump-and-done. Clinton apparently doesn't.

Because you are carefully angling with the "something illegal". There are things that are illegal that are not morally wrong, IMO, and there are plenty of things that are perfectly legal that are morally heinous.

The legality of Clinton's email spectacle isn't really relevant to how someone should judge it.

One problem with contracting your US Gov. State Dept. communications to friends and family.

It's going to end up in a cloud server. Either by accident, hacking or deliberate design. Datto's whole business model is built on cloud backup.

Bits and pieces could continue to dribble in from various storage locations for months.

I'm told she'll do better as President of US. I disagree.

We at DU have a choice other than HRC.

Fundamentally, it our values do not include allowing members to be bullied for voicing progressive views just because they don't fall in line with the HRC camp. We should call it out when it happens. I judge those effort to be directed and synchronized by a vast third-way conspiracy.

They were communicating internally about sending an email (which would be an add ) to team Clinton so they had it in writing that team Clinton wanted the backups deleted after 30 days-

Apparently those instructions from team Clinton were only verbal. Anybody who knows anything about backing up data would know it is ridiculous to only keep it for 30 days if it's email or billing data or whatever.

https://news.yahoo.com/state-department-seeks-more-related-emails-clinton-191302551--politics.html

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is leaning on former Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton to hand over any additional work-related emails sent or received using private accounts.

Hard to have faith that this campaign isn't a bottomless pinata of embarrassing revelations. The best that most can hope is that the campaign is finally getting a handle on things. But I don't see that, and I envision that soon we'll be hearing more about the Clinton Foundation, rather than important issues.

Not enough time to accomplish, smoothly, everything that was hoped for between 2008 and the start of the current campaign, and now having played a bit too fast and loose is exacting its price.

My 2 cents.

Are you talking about the Colorado company? The New Jersey company? The company that scanned her emails for spam? The network provider who she used to access these email? The relay Providors who forwarded these classified emails. At some point we might have to ask, who isn't involved in this debacle.
