Steelworkers union says ATI talks to resume

Contract negotiations will resume Sept. 11 between steelmaker Allegheny Technologies Inc. and union officials, the United Steelworkers said Monday, the first sign of progress since the company locked out 2,200 employees two weeks ago.
Another 30,000 union employees of U.S. Steel Corp. and ArcelorMittal, whose contracts expire Tuesday, are poised to keep working as talks continue.
Negotiations throughout the summer have been slowed by management's demands for unfair and unnecessary concessions from workers at all three companies, the union said in one of several online updates a day before the deadline.
Contracts with Pittsburgh-based ATI expired June 30 and negotiations broke down last month when the specialty steelmaker proposed a last, best and final offer. The union said ATI has not indicated whether it will modify that offer before the sides meet at the Pittsburgh offices of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
