Colin Powell Admits In His New Book That The Decision To Go To War In Iraq Was ‘Never Debated’This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by uppityperson (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). o you remember that pretend war for democracy in Iraq that cost us trillions of dollars and took the lives of thousands of US soldiers, not to mention ravaged an entire nation and created even more enemies for the United States all to better Haliburton’s bottom line? Well, it seems that not even a nanosecond of debate took place among the ranks of the Bush Administration. Former Secretary of State and one of the very few sane Republicans left, Colin Powell, recently penned a book where he gives one of the most startling and equally nauseating accounts yet as it pertains to the Bush Administration’s horrible misadventure in the Middle East. According to Powell, key members of Bush’s cabinet never once debated about whether going to war in Iraq was a good idea. In other wards, they might as well said because it was cloudy out or Bush was bored. In a chapter discussing what he calls his “infamous” February 2003 speech to the United Nations where he authoritatively presented what was later exposed as gross misinformation about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Powell notes that by that time, war “was approaching,” according to the Huffington Post. By then, the President did not think war could be avoided,” Powell writes. “He had crossed the line in his own mind, even though the NSC had never met — and never would meet — to discuss the decision.” (Source: Huffington Post) Read more: http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/05/09/the-death-of-the-moderate-politician/

3. He killed any respect for him that I'd ever had for him on that day. Killed it dead.

You could have fallen on your sword after you called "bullshit" on the script they were giving you to read at the UN. And you could have made an issue about the flimsy "justification" for the Iraq war. You might have turned the tables and allowed opponents of the war to get some attention, finally, instead of being locked out in the cold the whole damn time.
And you failed. You went along to get along. And you ruined your "legacy" for all time. |

6. Colin Powell can kiss my ass.

He helped with the My Lai cover-up.
(And has YET to admit his involvement.) He wasn't hesitant making that bushit presentation at the UN. He was happy to do so, for his bosses, Bush and Cheney. Powell, you're nothing but a big part of the war crimes called "Mission Accomplished." |

8. The basic M.O. of the Bush (mis-)administration the entire time

was to lie, hide, obfuscate, bribe, intimidate until they got what they wanted and it wasn't until AFTERWARDS that we realized what really happened and all the various ways most of us ended up being screwed by them.
I used to have some measure of respect for Powell and even (naively) believed that he would set George W. Bush straight about the folly of invading Iraq but knowing what we know now about his shilling for the war DESPITE knowing that nobody was even f******g DEBATING GOING TO WAR (Red flag, anybody? General?) and the information he presented to the UN was a a bunch of bull, he can twist in the wind for all I care. He was totally complicit in the Bush (mis-)administration's follies and the blood of US soldiers and Iraqi men, women, and children who had done NOTHING to us and whose only "crime" was being forced to live under the brutal and repressive regime lead by a man George W. Bush personally detested. |
