Keith Judd, Texas Inmate, Gets 40 Percent Of Votes Against Obama In West Virginia Democratic Primary By LAWRENCE MESSINA 05/08/12 11:16 PM ET AP CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Just how unpopular is President Barack Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas is getting 4 out of 10 votes in West Virginia's Democratic presidential primary. The inmate, Keith Judd, is serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. With 83 percent of precincts reporting, Obama was receiving 60 percent of the vote to Judd's 40 percent. For some West Virginia Democrats, simply running against Obama is enough to get Judd votes. "I voted against Obama," said Ronnie Brown, a 43-year-old electrician from Cross Lanes who called himself a conservative Democrat. "I don't like him. He didn't carry the state before and I'm not going to let him carry it again." When asked which presidential candidate he voted for, Brown said, "That guy out of Texas." I have to admit I just don't understand WV. One of the poorest states in the union, more or less owned by out of state corporations who have exploited its citizens for generations, and they keep voting for policies that keep them uneducated, unhealthy and struggling financially. I guess for some people fat, drunk and stupid is a way to go through life. |

and I got a fantastic little jethro from them. I'm surprised at how militant they are about boycotting stores and businesses that have anything to do with Massey Corp. They won't eat at one of the local steak houses in Beckley because one of the Massey managers owns it; they won't do business with the Starbucks in another area because the daughter of one of the other Massey big wigs runs that location. In theory, they hate the owners of the mining companies. But, they'll scream about big government regulations along with Rush Limbaugh and leaving free enterprise alone. They'll snarl about green energy tree-loving hippies. Damn people don't even see the cognitive dissonance of it all. The irony is classic.

|
This article muses about for a rationale for this Obama hatred-- mining permits, too much environmental regulation, yada yada yada-- and deliberately avoids the elephant in the room: in 2008 twenty percent of WVa Dems-- the highest percentage in the country-- self-identified as racists. This probably signifies a much higher voting percentage (maybe... 40%?), since most racists will lie to pollsters about their beliefs.

The problem is DUers just don't know when they're being played sometimes. This BS story is a win-win for repubs if the left falls for it - either we buy the myth that Dems are largely "over" Obama, or we turn on each other and create division and infighting in the party instead of sticking together to ensure a win in November.

I respect the fact that if a democrat gets elected it's going to be a very conservative one. Hell I've had republican representation more liberal than what they elect in West Virginia. are a worker state that rejects the needs for pro-worker politics. I guess one of the things is that they are a big coal state and change is very threatening to them as workers similar to what happened when BP destroyed the Gulf. When Obama tried to put a ban on deep water drilling the workers had a fit.
The other thing is that they may be deeply into rw religion and more bigoted than other parts of the country. Who knows what is going on in that state? How do other Democrats do there? Isn't Jay Rockefeller their governor? |

I lived in WV for 36 years.... In WV most everyone registers Democrat...that 40% are RDINO's RDINO's Registered Democrats in Name Only. If you plan on having any say in your state and local elections you pretty much have to register democrat. Lot's of offices don't even have a republican challenger, and the R's and I's that do run are nutbags. So most everyone registers Democrat.... That 40% reflects the Republican in WV that would never vote Obama anyway. |

|
Last edited Wed May 9, 2012, 02:19 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) The results are not even all in yet, but here's what it looks like so far (percentages rounded to nearest 5%):
74k (35%) Obama 58k (25%) Romney 56k (25%) Judd the convict 25k (10%) Republican other than Romney The right-wing media is going to be spinning this story hard, but they'll never show it in these terms. It's going to be all about how Obama is losing supporters in WV and how this somehow can be extrapolated to the entire country. If WV voters sincerely align with their party registrations, then Obama still beats Romney easily. And McCain beat Obama in the general in 2008 (397k to 304k), so that's actually a gain in support for Obama. If WV voters do not truly align with their party registrations, then this is all meaningless to begin with - just a bunch of Republican voters who are registered as Dems and are playing cutesy games. edit - Here is the link: http://apps.sos.wv.gov/elections/results/index.aspx?year=2012&eid=8 I also updated the numbers. Guessing that most giving their "protest vote" to Judd, have no idea who he is, nor that he is imprisoned.
I can't judge a state - my state's GOP just gave a 20% margin to a reactionary talibornigan candidate over Sen Lugar "because he is too liberal." Thus - I shake my head about low information voters in general, and worry for our future. I have no idea how to turn the tide - when people are increasingly worried about survival - how to create an environment where becoming high information voters (that is - going out and getting more information) is valued and pursued. |

52. West Virginia Secretary of State Election Site. WV SOS is in charge of counting the Votes in WV
|
Last edited Thu May 10, 2012, 01:37 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) http://apps.sos.wv.gov/elections/results/index.aspx
Let me say the following, most of the primary election results were decided before the first vote was cast. Thus a lot of West Virginians did NOT see a need to vote, they was no real contest in any of the elections. Joe Manchin III won the Democratic Nomination for Senator with over 81% of the vote. Sue Thorn won the nomination for the 1st Congressional District with 100% of the vote (She was unopposed). Nick Rehall II won the nomination for the 3rd Congressional District with 100% of the vote (He was unopposed). Thus the only real issue was in the 2nd Congressional District where the three candidates divided the vote almost evenly between them. Earl Tomblin won the Nomination for Governor with over 84% of the vote. The Secretary of State, The Auditor, The Attorney General, the State Treasurer all won with 100% of the vote, all were unopposed. Thus the only two state wide CONTESTED election for the nomination were the Commissioner of Agriculture and the Chief Justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court. Both elections had multiple candidates. Thus, unless you were concerned about these two offices why vote? The other state wide offices either had no opposition or just nominal opposition. Of the 16 State Senate seats up for election, 8 had no opposition. In the State House, the Democrats did NOT even field a Candidate in 11 Districts, and 16 ran unopposed out of 58 seats (Some seats, about 8, have no results as of 1:10 am EST, thus not posted on the SOS web site if the Candidates were unopposed or note), Side note the WV legislature web site says they are 58 seats, but the SOS site list 67 seats. West Virignia Legislature web site" http://www.legis.state.wv.us/House/members/delmemview1.cfm Of the Five local Judgeships on the ballot, One was uncontested by the Democrats, Two were unopposed. Thus pointing out there was NOT much on the ballot for many people of West Virginia to vote for or against, thus how much of this vote is a protest vote against Obama or against Obama's policies is unknown. I do NOT believe Obama cares for he does NOT need West Virginia to win re-election, thus no one had any monetary incentive to find out which. Voting turnout should have been small, thus a small disaffected minority could have a huge impact on who won where, but the results are meaningless for the Vast Majority of West Virginia just did NOT participate in this election, will do so in November but not the primary. SIDE NOTE: In the election Obama received 76, 510 votes out of 133,591 cast. Manchin who is running for Senator received 124,875 out of 153,627 cast. In simple terms just under 20,000 people did NOT vote for President for it was already concluded, but did vote for Senator. Thus a lot of people voted against Obama (or skipped voting for the President) while voting for the rest of the Democratic endorsed ticket. Is the negative vote because of the Race of Obama, his perceived attitude to coal (West Virginia tends to vote pro-coal), or something else. I suspect it is more the view that West Virginia view Obama policies as being anti-coal, then anything else. |
