Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters
(Reuters) - A 3-year-old Detroit boy was fatally shot by his 11-year-old brother on Monday afternoon while the two played with a gun in their backyard, The Detroit News reported.
The two were inside a car in the yard when the shot was fired, the newspaper said, citing Detroit police.
Detroit Police Officer Nicole Kirkwood confirmed to Reuters that a 3-year-old was shot in the head by an 11-year-old in a vehicle, but could not provide the younger child's condition or their relationship.
No names were released, and no other information was immediately available.

(6,171 posts)It's a bit strange though, when it's been reported that the boy was killed. Perhaps the Detroit Police are just very tight-lipped...

. . . .
The Detroit News noted that two others were killed in the city in recent months while someone played with a gun - a 14-year-old boy fatally shot a 14-year-old girl in January, and a 9-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in December.

(13 posts)I am guessing the boy did not get the ammunition and load it himself.
I hope the father is charged criminally.

(51,122 posts)It costs the life of a 3-year-old and decades of counciling for an 11-year-old.
Worth every tear to gun culture.

(6,971 posts)Couldn't we lobby insurance companies. Appeal to their bottom line. Create firearm injury clauses in the policies. Something along the line of. Coverage is denied if injury is caused by unregistered and or undeclared firearm in home, on property or person. Insured must declare ownership of firearms.

(53,235 posts)a fork. A fork can be a weapon. It can poke your eye out. No, not a fork. A spoon, perhaps? Shot with a spoon? No, no spoon shots. What else could he have shot the baby with?
A gun? No, not a gun. Guns don't shoot people, we're told. Guns don't take lives, they save them, we're told. I'm sure that little baby would tell you that, too, if he wasn't shot to death. With a goddam gun.

(2,841 posts)It doesn't cost much to store a gun and lock it; but by the same token, in Detroit the violence is so bad most sleep with the gun unsupervised at the side of their bed. Kids can easily reach for it and take it out to play "Cops and Robbers". R.I.P. little guy.
