Man in Milwaukee shoots dog after mistaking it for lion

Source: CBS News

MILWAUKEE -- It's been a rough 24 hours for a dog now being called Simba. The dog was wandering on a street in Milwaukee when animal control says a person mistook him for a mountain lion, pulled out a gun and shot him, reports CBS affiliate WDJT.

"The bullet went through his leg, fractured his bone," said Karen Sparapani, executive director of the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.

Milwaukee police said a woman reported seeing a lion Monday afternoon in her north side neighborhood. Police Chief Edward Flynn said his officers were given cellphone video of an animal that appeared to be a "lion-ish creature."

"It's true that they're more afraid of us than we are of them. They just want to eat their food and make their babies," Sparapani said.

Looking for an excuse to shoot something moving does in no way inoculate you from culpability if you shoot somebody's dog, or worse, someone's child.

But that seems to be the opinion of many gunbearers. "Oops, I thought it was a yeti (after shooting a 5 year old.)"

"Oops, I thought it was a mountain lion (after shooting someone's dog)."

This hair-triggered shit needs to stop. If you are too irresponsible to check and verify your target, you are in no way responsible enough to use a gun.

A rifle bullet can travel a long ass way.

I think hunters that injure or kill people should be held legally responsible.

And financially liable for property damage

On edit, I am not at all against responsible hunting.

assholes even give the minor thought to collateral damage. You can't say "Oops" when you shoot somebody's kid anymore than you can say "Oops, ran over your kid."

Yet somehow, they seem to think that the kid shouldn't have been there at that day and time, while absolving themselves of all personal responsibility for their own actions.

Like, don't tote a damn firearm if you can't be bothered to see what you are shooting at, or don't drive a damn car if you are intoxicated.

Please get right in my face and explain to me how it is any different driving drunk than it is shooting without knowing what on earth your target is.

Rifles are also needed in rural areas.

Rifles and handguns are not needed in the hands of people that are unaware of the damage they can do by shooting before verifying a target and people irresponsible enough that they accidentally shoot people in grocery stores, at weddings and in churches.

And people who have little kids and don't have the sense to lock up their firearms so the kids cannot get to them, I must add!

the catlike creature has been spotted and reported numerous times and pumas are native to the state, so it is possible a puma is in the area.

It breaks my heart though. My sweetie got out and was injured. It cost me in total more than $400 to get her back to good. I happily paid the vet for the treatment to my beloved Lady, well, because I love her.

Ramen isn't just for college students you know. It was winter at the time. Icy and horrible weather. I didn't use heat except to keep my pipes thawed. I was lucky to be able to make those choices. I realize that.

Before anyone judges me. I do budget my pets annual care. Once in a while it exceeds my expectations and I make do as best I can. They are loved, and not in anyway neglected or untended. Actually, they get better medical care than I do for the money.

I my vet.
