Hundreds protest as ALEC conference begins downtown

Source: Fox 5 San Diego

SAN DIEGO — More than 1,000 protesters aligned with organized labor and social justice organizations demonstrated Wednesday in downtown San Diego against an organization that they contend allows corporate lobbyists to cozy up to lawmakers.

The organization, the American Legislative Exchange Council, is meeting this week at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

A spokesperson for ALEC, which bills itself as the nation’s largest nonpartisan voluntary membership organization of state legislators, could not be reached for comment.

The council is governed by state legislators who comprised the board of directors and is advised by the Private Enterprise Advisory Council, a group of private, foundation and think tank members. On its website, the group touts limited government, free markets and federalism.

WASHINGTON, July 22, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hundreds of Teamsters from across California traveled to San Diego today to participate in a massive protest outside a national meeting for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The Teamsters had one clear message they wanted to send – it was time for UPS to end its affiliation with ALEC.

The Teamsters Union represents more than 250,000 members at UPS and UPS Freight. UPS remains an active member of ALEC despite the organization's anti-worker and anti-union agenda that seeks to undermine and weaken worker protections. As of April 2015, more than 120 major corporations and organizations have publically announced they no longer work with ALEC due to the organization's stance on many controversial issues.

"Global corporations like Coca Cola, Apple, McDonald's and even Walmart have decided that continuing a relationship with this toxic organization is too damaging to their brand," said Ken Hall, Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer and Package Division Director. "It begs the question of why UPS, the largest unionized company in America, continues to associate with ALEC. It's time for UPS to do the right thing for its workers and cut ties with ALEC."

Randy Cammack, President of Teamster Joint Council 42, which represents members throughout Southern California, spoke at the protest and asked the crowd to help him send a message to a UPS representative inside.

requesting from every legislation and legislature representative at this little shindig about open secrets laws in all of the states and if there has been any criminal activity behind these "close door" get togethers.
To find out who, how much, and what kind of "deals' they have made with these people-------there clearly some breaking of laws that are the books.

It all starts at the local level, from the city council, to the state and we have a "Right to Know"

Good piece
