CNN panel explodes ex-cop says Bland died 'arrogant from - beginning'

Last edited Wed Jul 22, 2015, 02:52 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Raw Story

CNN contributor and former NYPD detective Harry Houck argued on Tuesday that a Texas woman would not have died in police custody if she had not been “arrogant from the very beginning.”

“An officer does have the choice to bring anyone out of the vehicle when he stops them for his own safety,” Houck told CNN’s Don Lemon on Tuesday. “The whole thing here is that she was very arrogant from the beginning, very dismissive of the officer, alright?”

“She has a right to be irritated,” Hill said. “A lot of us get irritated when we get pulled over. This officer comes to her and says, ‘Is there something wrong? You seem like you have an attitude.’ He’s trying to pick a fight with her.”

“Sometimes police officers act as if you’re not completely kowtowing and deferential, that somehow you’re violating a law,” he continued. “This is a perfect example of how vulnerable black women are in public spaces to law enforcement.”

CNN Cop is being as much of a dickhead as the arresting officer.

NOTE: Arresting officer has been placed on desk job - for violating protocol.

If you look at the Texas Department of Public Safety released video, it is clear that the arresting officer escalated the dynamics by prodding Sandra's emotional state. When she answered that she was frustrated for doing a good thing of pulling out of the way of the officer, it is as if she called him a butthole and this enraged him.

Also, I've got a GD thread about the fact that the video is doctored.

Houck was a total dick. But he saw the same thing we all saw and that was his honest reaction. Tells you a lot right there. Excuse me but please write the memo that we are all supposed to bend to the will of police officers in every encounter no matter what our actual rights might be. Some of us didn't get that memo. And moreover, some of us are trying to figure out how the same people who think that not being happy about being treated unfairly somehow equals grounds for being killed.

The highest likelihood of getting killed is when different law enforcement agencies partner together on a case. On a stop, one will tell you to raise your hands, and the other will tell you to keep your hands on the steering wheel. The result is tragic. And then, the cops have a story they will share as if it's a funny anecdote from work.

So, yes, it's about time that they all come up with a standard procedure so we can have a better chance of surviving these stops.

If any from DU would like to meet me there, please pm me. We could attend as a group, or not.

now he is really pissed - as he threatens to snatch her from the car.

Thu Jul 23, 2015, 02:33 PM
Jul 2015

that he is paid to do.

Same for any person who works with the public and has to bring bad news.

It's part of his job. Same for judges. Same for doctors. Same for nurses. Especially for nurses.

And especially for TEACHERS. Teachers take some of the most awful abuse around for nothing. The officer was giving this driver a ticket the driver could not afford. It's understandable that the driver was angry. Teachers tell students to just be polite and get horrible treatment sometimes even injured, but they too are paid in part to be patient and firm without losing self-control.

It's part of the job. It takes a strong person to stay calm. But that is part of the job. And if an officer or other person cannot stay calm, then they should look for different work.

It has not changed for the better since 1992.

People are generally much more mean spirited, vindictive and self-centered than 23 years ago. Just the way Raygun and his ilk have wanted things to evolve.

Wed Jul 22, 2015, 01:22 PM
Jul 2015

Update at 8:19 p.m.:Just hours after the video of Sandra Bland’s arrest was released, the pews were filled at the Johnson Phillip All Faiths Church on Prairie View A&M’s campus Tuesday night for an hour long memorial service.

Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, told an energized crowd while pacing back and forth that “something occurred that is going to change the world.”

Before she returned to Texas, Reed-Veal said her daughter told her: “My purpose is to go back to Texas and stop all the injustices in the South.”

Ignore the headline distraction:

Middle aged white guy here.

I was pulled over a few years ago in my small town. By the police chief. Who knew me, at least by site if not by name.

He turned on his lights in a bad spot, so I pulled off when I thought it was safe, and he asked me to get out of the car.

I did.

Then, with that dead-eyed look only cops and serial killers have, asked me why I didn't stop immediately. I explained, moving my hands to point. He then directed me to stop waving my hands around. What did he want me to do, point with my chin?

I don't remember why I was stopped. I think it was a rear light out or something. Got a warning.

Overall, he was a dick. Is there a law that says a cop can't also be a human being? I remember that incident and still consider him a dick. He's probably forgotten.

He pulled over someone for NOT having an insurance card... gave that person a warning ticket.

Then he begins up the road, makes a left turn, zooms up behind the girl, who then moves over and he lights her up....

He had no way of knowing, before he sped up, that she was not white.

Thu Jul 23, 2015, 01:20 PM
Jul 2015

Going the other way. When she saw him coming up behind her, she pulled over to the right to get out of his way.

I would do the same, thinking that the cop got a call he was responding to even without a siren or lights. Why else would he have made a u-turn?

In her case it turned out he made a u-turn to hassle a black woman - there was no obvious reason for him to turn around in order to follow her; no reason for him to pull her over since it was apparent she was doing it to let the cop car pass her. The only reason I could see from the long video was that he saw a black person/woman he could pick on.

then he pulled out, drove down the road and made a Left Turn - coming immediately up behind Sandra

where she then moved over (as she said, to get out of his way and let him pass) - when he then turned on his lights.
