AIPAC Drops Pretense Of Supporting Iran Deal, Urges Congress To Vote It Down

Source: Huffington

Posted: 07/15/2015 4:38 pm EDT Updated: 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON -- The American Israel Public Affairs Committee on Wednesday issued its first public direction to Congress to reject the nuclear agreement that was finalized the previous day between Iran, the U.S. and five world powers.

“After more than 20 months of negotiations, the United States and its negotiating partners announced a nuclear agreement with Iran. Throughout the negotiations, AIPAC outlined five critical criteria for a good deal,” read a page on AIPAC’s website. “Unfortunately, the proposed agreement is fundamentally flawed in each of these vital areas. Urge your senators and representative to oppose the agreement.”

The nuclear agreement reached on Tuesday will dismantle the majority of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, cap uranium and plutonium production at levels insufficient to fuel a weapon, and force Iran to comply with 24/7 monitoring of its declared nuclear facilities, as well as intrusive inspections of potential undeclared sites. In exchange, Iran will receive billions of dollars' worth of sanctions relief.

Before the agreement can be implemented, Congress has 60 days to review the deal -- and at the end of this period, lawmakers have the option to pass a resolution of disapproval, which would prevent the president from granting Iran relief from sanctions that were imposed by Congress. President Barack Obama has already vowed to veto such a resolution, but lawmakers could override the veto with a 67 percent majority in both the House and the Senate. While several Republicans have vowed to vote against the Iran deal, it is unlikely that enough Democrats would break with a president of their party to create a veto-proof supermajority.

OU, AIPAC to Mobilize Rabbis and Synagogues to Pressure Key Dems on Iran Deal

Orthodox Jewish leaders are preparing to lobby against the nuclear deal with Iran, reached on Tuesday, mobilizing opposition among rabbis and synagogues across the United States, in an effort to pressure Democratic House representatives and Senators who are deliberating their support to vote against the agreement.

In a joint statement issued by the Orthodox Union and the Rabbinical Council of America, the Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization and its rabbinic membership said they are gravely concerned about the deal, after a day-long review.

“Our assessment of the agreement, and of the presentations by government officials and analysts, is driven by one fundamental question: Will the proposed agreement protect the security of the United States, Israel and our other allies? By this standard, we have found the deal with Iran seriously wanting and will mobilize our member rabbis and synagogues throughout the nation to urge Congress to fulfill their mandate and disapprove the agreement,” the statement read.

“Congress’ consideration of this agreement over the next 60 days is likely the most important foreign policy decision of our generation. It must consider the concerns raised above and other critical issues we will raise in the coming days,” the group asserted.

The Orthodox Union and Rabbinical Council of America—through the OU Advocacy Center—will work in the coming weeks “to mobilize our rabbis and synagogues across the United States to ensure our elected representatives hear our concerns and fulfill their solemn responsibility to protect and defend our vital national security interests.”

They say that Iran cannot be trusted and will continue to develop a nuclear bomb in secrecy. That is exactly what they did. They developed nuclear bombs while claiming that there was no such program and continue to deny that they have nuclear bombs. They also have the capability to deliver these with missiles. Further more they have refuse to sign the Nonproliferation Treaty.

I am very concerned that they would not hesitate to use their nuclear capabilities if they actually felt they were being seriously threatened.

What is wrong with these people? A nuclear agreement with Iran will deter their making a nuclear weapon. So Israel will be safer.
What is their problem? Do they need an enemy so badly that they invent fantasies about Iran? Iran has not had a nuclear weapon and now this provides assurances that they won't do it in the future. What on earth is wrong with these non reality based fanatics? They are so enraptured with fear that they invent ideas and then believe them!

A thorn in the side of the US for generations. They need their own Obama, not a Cheney clone. I lost all respect for them many "settlements" ago.

The person who already called it a triumph for democracy? I hope ALL the Democratic nominees join in backing this deal. They should not consider the position of big donors - if it is not in their view of the national interest.

For me, this IS a litmus test issue. I will not vote for anyone, especially if they put money over principle on this issue. Bernie is my Senator - and I will call his office, Welch's office and Leahy's office. I KNOW the AIPAC forces will do so as well.
