HARTFORD, Connecticut | Sat May 5, 2012 11:16am EDT

(Reuters) - The Connecticut Senate passed a bill on Saturday legalizing marijuana use for medical purposes with tight restrictions aimed at avoiding problems that have plagued some of the 16 other states where pot is now legal.

After nearly 10 hours of debate, the Senate voted 21-13 in favor of the measure, which already cleared the House.

Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy was expected to sign the bill. Once he does, Connecticut will join 16 other states and the District of Columbia in allowing use of marijuana to treat sick patients.

Connecticut's legislation calls for tight regulation of the plant, a move advocates say is aimed at avoiding problems that have plagued some of the other states, include disagreements with the federal government.

3. That makes 17 states and the District of Columbia since 1996.

And at least two states, Colorado and Washington, will vote on full legalization this year. Two others, Oregon and Montana, have ongoing efforts that appear well-placed to also make the ballot.

You're on the wrong side of history, Mr. Obama. Not to mention the Republicans.

6. Congrats to Connecticut!

Along with Connecticut, New Hampshire awaits a Senate vote for pass its medical marijuana law, as well.

That will make 18 states, plus the District of Columbia, that have told the Federal Govt. the current scheduling of cannabis is wrong and should be changed.

9. Good news

but it will be an uphill battle, it has been in Arizona anyway. Landlords won't rent to dispensaries, apartment owners making tenants sign marijuana no use forms....the list goes on. I wish them good luck though.
