Georgia woman accused of providing gun used to kill Officer Kerrie Orozco

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Alissa Skelton

Federal authorities in Georgia have arrested a woman accused of providing the gun an Omaha man used to shoot and kill an Omaha police officer in May.

Jalita Johnson, 26, purchased a 9mm Glock pistol fitted with a 50 round drum magazine on April 23 from a pawn shop in Jonesboro, Georgia, for Marcus Wheeler, according to federal court documents.

About a month later, Wheeler shot and killed Omaha police officer Kerrie Orozco when police tried to arrest him in the Florence neighborhood.

Wheeler fired nine rounds from the handgun and struck Orozco once. Police Sgt. Jeffrey Kopietz shot and killed Wheeler.

Sounds like an illegal straw purchase and she should go to jail. The seller also should lose his FFL if it is proven they also knew of the straw purchase.

by good guys with guns but the bad guy still did the bad deed

She'd be alive if the bad guy were not lethally armed

So this instance speaks directly to the problem

Brave lady deserves thanks for her public service

$250,000 fine and 10 years in prison is the maximum sentence...since the gun was used to kill a police officer, bet on prosecutors seeking the max on both fine and imprisonment.

If the victim had Not been a cop, no one would have looked for the chain of custody on the weapon. Just proves there are two, or more, sets of laws in this country. The Police certainly operate under a different set than the rest of us. They can speed, assault, murder, rob, rape, deal drugs, intimidate, threaten to kill, etc. with total impunity by the justice system. Find me a family member with a traffic ticket written against them. It NEVER happens. Cops make sure that other cops families are protected from stupid things like traffic offenses that the rest of us dread.

They run the numbers on every gun found at a crime scene. The ATF has an entire department set up to do it, the National Tracing Center.

If 10 years is greater than the maximum for the crime that led to a person being found out as a straw purchaser, sure - if the sentence for the crime is greater than that, the purchase sentence should be equivalent.

Personally, string 'em both up - doesn't seem to be much actual question of guilt here.
