Carli Lloyd leads U.S. to Women's World Cup title in 5-2 win over Japan

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The history of soccer in America will not be written without this name: Carli Lloyd.

The United States star midfielder scored three times in the first half to vault the Americans to their third Women's World Cup title on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Japan at B.C. Place. Lloyd scored from close, she scored from far and she scored a place in U.S. sports lore for a team that came together beautifully to vanquish all comers and now will stand aside the 1999 team as most cherished ever by a still-growing soccer nation.

The theme of the team has been "She believes" and Lloyd made everyone believe within the first five minutes of the match, redirecting a shot from Megan Rapinoe at three minutes and then knocking in a second goal two minutes later.

'They scored 2 in the first five minutes.'

Then she ran in again about two minutes later.

'3.'

was mind-blowing. She saw the goalie was out of position. Then to make a shot from mid-field, over the goalie's head. That's friggin' amazing.

Great team. Great game. So proud of the way the women played in the entire tournament. They saved their best game for last!

Japan's goalie was crying a lot after the game. I like when players let their emotions out. It's healthy. It's the beautiful game but it can also be very cruel.

I don't know if you had a chance to see what happen with England and Laura Bassett in their loss to Japan the previous game. If you get the chance check it out on youtube and make sure you see the England coach's post-game interview. That England then went and beat Germany for the third place game yesterday (first time they've ever beat Germany) just makes it all the more remarkable.

The USA lost an agonizing 2011 World Cup Final to Japan, on penalty kicks. It was heartbreaking for them. They worked really hard to get where they are now and deserve what they achieved. They are truly number one in the world. This tournament demonstrates how much women's soccer has improved. There's more parity now, more great teams than ever before.

Enjoy the game!

... and peaked at exactly the right time. What an amazing performance yesterday, the best I've ever seen them play. That first half left me breathless!

Nice to see Abby Wambach and Christie Rampone lifting the trophy together. Legends!

And a quick tip o' the hat to England for winning the bronze medal Saturday. You lot did my old country proud.

And I just found out we're gonna be seeing some NWSL games broadcast LIVE on FoxSports! What a step up from that awful online streaming we've had to put up with until now. I only wish my Colorado Rapids had a team in the top league. Maybe one day, eh?

was the simple fact that we put them away early on. In all the other matches, we had golden opportunities within the first few minutes, only to fail to score. Against a possession-oriented team like Japan, that was relying on keeping the scoreline close, this was huge.

Also, as Tony DiCicco pointed out before the scoring started, winning the coin toss was huge because Japan's defense had to play into the sun in the first half. At this level of play, any small advantage matters.

Prediction: Morgan Brian will be a star on the team for many years to come. She's poised, never gets rattled, and plays the game effortlessly. This from the youngest player at the tournament. Her performance as a holding midfielder is what freed Lloyd up front in the knockout rounds.
