Boulder's famous 'falling bear' killed on U.S. 36
Source: Daily Camera
The bear famously tranquilized on the University of Colorado campus last week, and immortalized in a viral photo by CU student Andy Duann, met a tragic death early Thursday in the Denver-bound lanes of U.S. 36.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said a 280-pound black bear that died on U.S. 36 after being hit by a car at about 5:40 a.m. Thursday was the same bear that became known worldwide last week after wandering onto the CU campus near the Williams Village dorm complex.
The bear, photographed in a now-famous image by Duann in mid-air falling from a tree after being tranquilized, was picked up by wildlife officials Thursday morning about a half-mile from the Cherryvale bridge southeast of Boulder.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said two cars were involved in the accident, resulting in minor injuries to one of the drivers.

Fate sucks sometimes.

(11,791 posts)Driving through Ohio is just an exercise in heartache. This morning it was a duck (and I cried because I love ducks). Yesterday, a woodchuck and a turtle.
This place is an animal lover's worst nightmare.

(1,628 posts)They should have taken that bear up to Nederland, at least.

(1,628 posts)That might even be around grand lake. But that was one dedicated bear. I guess curiosity kills bears too.

(39,665 posts)...I'm glad to hear the Camry driver is even alive.
As to dropping him off further away, bears have a good sense of where "home" is and head back there. Not much point in trying to relocate them.

(17,086 posts)The first car saw the bear and pulled over with it's emergency flashers on. The second car moved left to avoid car #1 and hit the bear. It's pretty understandable.

(5,917 posts)the 1st car move to the right therefore was already out of car #2's way . it wasnt so dark the bearcouldnt be seen the driver said he saw the bear. the diverof car#2 was possibly A. going too fast if it was that dark out B. not looking out as to what was ahead of him probably giving the 1st car the stink-eye as he passed. C. distracted with a cell phone. whatever it was the driver should have been able to see something that big if he was concentrating on the driving

(30,947 posts)and it would still be dark. If I encountered anything in the road, I would have to be almost on top of it before I could stop.
