TACOMA, Wash. — A local veterans group has been raising money to support the wife and children of Sgt. Robert Bales, the soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians.

“They will need it all,” said Carlos Alameda, Veterans of Foreign Wars state commander, who was introduced to the staff sergeant at an event before he deployed. “They will need more than that.”

The (Tacoma) News Tribune of reported Sunday that the group’s chapter in Tacoma raised nearly $2,000 for the family earlier this month.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 91 in Tacoma also arranged for Kari Bales and her children — a 5-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son — to ride in a float during the Daffodil Parade.

3. It's a nice jesture. These poor people have been shunned, threatened

humiliated and are probably in shock. Rather than thinking riding a float diminishes or replaces the real issue, I'll accept that there could be some healing without much trouble, so why not? The little ones being honored helps the mom too.

2. "...helping other veterans or families that have a need..."

what they do best... I did much of my growing up at the VFW National Home

http://www.vfwnationalhome.org/page.aspx?pid=406

my Grandfather was a WWI Vet and died early... my Grandmother moved my Dad and Aunt from the hills of Vermont to the newly built VFW National Home and she worked there as a Housemother until she retired in the 80's

say what you will... I have very fond memories of VFW

5. I'm a member

I think the VFW is a far better organization then the Legion (but I'm a member of that, too).

4. We don't convict families of those who do wrong

His family has been hurt, too, by what Bales did. It reminds me of Amish Grace.

6. I agree

This is a great act of compassion. They are innocent, especially the children.
